| First heat and vomiting...Please help I have already placed a thread about our 8 month old female (Maya) who is experiencing her first heat. She seemed to have started bleeding Thursday and she vomited foamy yellow bile. Friday she was moody and tired, didn't have much to eat and then vomited some of her food. Saturday I made her rice and added an egg, she seem to do fine until she had some dog biscuits and then shortly after vomited the biscuits. She also had some plain homemade chicken broth which seem to do her some good. This morning I thought we had turned a corner, she seems to have energy but she wasn't very hungry. I gave her some yogurt she ate a little, I gave her some more chicken broth, she had a little, I tried to give her some rice, not go.....before leaving the house I left her 2 biscuits along with her food, we came home and she had eaten the biscuits and vomited them. I have just made her some chicken poached in chicken broth and she eat it with hunger, I didn't give her alot for fear of her being sick again. After all this long explanation, I guess what I am wondering is, is this normal for the first heat What can I feed her that would be gentle on her stomach and should I give her something for the bile that must be occuring in her stomach. Please, any information and sharing of experiences would be greatly appreciated. Oh, I forgot, late this morning she vomited (yellowish brown), even though she had not really eaten much, and had a very very soft bowel movement.....I also noticed that she had a rather large bowel movement Saturday morning but didn't have her evening bowel movement. She usually has 2 to 3 movements a day but the last 2 days she has had 2 abnormal movements. I will call the vet tomorrow but I am hoping to obtain some feedback in the mean while. |

| I did post on your other thread, but if she's still vomiting that frequently and basically anything you give her - that's not normal at all. Is she alert, active, otherwise seem ok? If she seems lethargic at all, I wouldn't wait till tomorrow for the vet, but if she seems ok and is keeping down water and at least some food, call your vet asap in the morning. In the mean time, offer her some cheerios or crackers (make sure not too much salt though) since she won't eat rice for you. You can also just give her some plain boiled chicken breast (can't remember if you said you did that yet). Avoid the "biscuts" for now, you want very bland, plain food. Don't push her to eat too much though, just enough to put something in her tummy until you can get to the vet tomorrow. (the weird poops are probably just because she's not eating properly). It's possible she has a UTI causing a bit of a fever and that could lead to the upset tummy, definatly needs to see the vet though. Let us know what the vet says tomorrow

| I would also not give the biscuits. What kind are they btw. Several of us responded to your other thread, and no vomiting with heat is not normal, but moodiness is. I would take her to the vet tomorrow.

| Thank you for your feedback, she has been vomiting on and off the last few days. I have given her some chicken in broth with very little rice and she ate it, this was 2 hours ago and she has kept it down. She is hungry and I know she wanted more but thought better to give her a little more after a few hours. I am making more chicken broth just for my baby! Anyway, she doesn't vomit immediately after she eats, it takes a few hours. I will give her more chicken in broth in another hour, that way it is 3 hours between small portions....what do you think? I am confused as to why she would have an UTI??? She is keeping herself clean and I have cleaned the area as well, does being in heat effect uti???? I have noticed that her urine is light in colour and she has had 3 pee's today. She also had a very very soft poop early afternoon that was larger than normal and she had another small very very soft one about an hour ago, I did notice that there was mucus. Thank you very much for all your suggestions, it is greatly appreciated. The biscuits are Mother Hubbart mix variety, I understand this is a very good product...?....I also have her on Acana Grassland.... Oh, I also have noticed, not related to the heat issue, that the last month or so her urine has become deeper in colour, not that light puppy pee....I figure it was due to her not being such a puppy....what are your thoughts? | Addition, I just gave her more chicken with broth and a little rice, she followed me into the kitchen and started jumping for food, she ate it with hunger, gave her about 2 heaping tablespoons approx. and she definitely wants more, but I will wait another 2 - 3 hours before giving her more....or should I just leave it at that for this evening???? Her eyes seem bright and she seem to have some energy, but as I said earlier, I thought we had turned a corner this morning cause she was jumping and seemed her old self....hum.... She seems very attentive with cleaning herself! |

The biscuits are fine, it's just that if they have a tummy issue you want to avoid anything "heavy" or hard to digest and biscuits and kibble take a bit more effort on their tummy's part vs. moist plain chicken and rice, they're fine normaly though The vomiting could be unrelated to the heat cycle, could just be a coincidence. Has her stool been checked for worms by the vet recently? Also, has she been on the Acana Grasslands since you got her or is this a new food to her? Whatever is going on, whether it's due to the heat cycle or something else, that much vomiting = vet visit, so give him a call today. If they vomit once, I don't worry, sometimes they eat too fast or whatever, but since she did it quite a few times, I'd take her in to be checked. It may be caused by the heat cycle, but that's just not normal. As far as her urine being darker recently, that 'could' possibly be a sign of a UTI or something else going on, but it's more likely that she's not drinking enough water. If the vet rules out any problems, you can give her a bit of canned food and that will hydrate her more. Even if she seems better today, I'd still take her in to the vet anyway. Let us know how it goes.
