| When is it time for dental cleanings? What are their teeth supposed to look like before a first dental cleaning. The pups both have a mild tarter on their teeths that usually a good toothbrush and some chewing cleans mostly up. At what age do they normally get a dental cleaning? Also Sadie's gums have brown almost black parts to them rather than just pink all over? Is that bad and what is it? Never noticed it before on here until today. |

| Black parts next to the pink is normal pigment. They are all different. If you can get most of the stuff off by brushing alone, then they are probably fine. The teeth should be checked preferably twice yearly by the vet to assess whether or not a dental is needed. Very generally, dentals are needed every 6 months to 2 years (some Yorkies without home care could use a dental every 3 months and Ellie hasn't needed one for 3 years, so this varies). Because it averages to about yearly, that is the general recommendation. A little bit of brown on the teeth may not indicate that a dental is needed whereas almost perfect teeth doesn't necessarily indicate that a dental can be skipped (because the gums needs to be assessed). So only a vet can look and answer this.

| I think Jackson will be needing one soon. He will be 3 in October. It's probably my fault because I've been really lazy with his teeth.... but he also has a slight over-bite and his bottom canine teeth are poking into his upper gums, so I know this needs to be taken care of soon, so I feel like I'll just get him a dental at the same time? Anyways, his teeth aren't terrible... it's his 4 canine teeth that have some yellow tarter build up.

| If it's just on the canines, it is possible that it's just an enamel issue. The vet would have to take a look. Yes, anything in the mouth can generally be done at the same time. Really if they are in there already and there is any build up at all, it's best to get it off.

We have a place here in Annapolis that specializes in dog dental. Was considering giving them a call and getting him an appointment to see what they can do. I started a thread on Jackson's teeth a little while back... http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...-overbite.html I found these two places... http://www.animaldentalcenter.com/ http://www.centerforveterinarydentis...rocedures.html

| I just took my Coco in to the vet and asked him to take a real good look at her teeth - only because she is 5 years old and have not had a dental yet. He said her teeth look good but that the back teeth are in need of some brushing. He said she will probably need a dental cleaning next year. I am so thankful because I don't brush them - at all. The groomer brushes her teeth when I bring her in about every 6 weeks or so. I give Coco one greenie every evening and I truly believe this is the reason why her teeth are so good. Also she may just have genetically good teeth. They are all straight and I didn't even need to take her in to have her puppy teeth removed. They all came out on their own. Good luck with your babies teeth?
