| This might help some of you guys Ok guys in case no one read what my problem was CLICK LINK HERE . Ok so my mom just came in and told me that she took the puppy to the vet. Well i just found out that his really 6 months old and not 7. The vet said that since his little he wants to win. Meaning he wants to rule the house hold. simply by not eating his food and eating of our hands. he said since the dog is pure breed that his extreamly intelligent so to becare full. He also said - Do not shower the puppy more than 2 times a month 1's is enough so just 12 times a YEAR!!. If you give the puppy more than 2 baths thats when they start to grow stuff on their skin. - A dog can go with out eating for 4 days. So anyone having trouble feeding your dog after giving them human food. DO NOT FEED THEM let them eat their own food. I thought my dog was skinny but they weight him at the vet and his weight is at 2.8 Kilos. Which is normal at his age 6 month. right now he got some pills in case he has parasites and some needles that he needed. right now his kinda drunk. the vet said is ok is just the effects. <-- thats my own reply to my own question that i asked on my other thread. Ok guys hope this helps maybe im not making any sense. but the dog is good so far. |

| I don't know WHAT vet you're going to but I would highly reccomend NOT taking that advice. First off, at that age it is EXTREMELY important they eat everyday. If you can't get the puppy to eat hard puppy food, go buy afew cans of canned food. Most dogs rarely ever resist canned food. They can die if they don't get the correct nutrience at that fragile age and weight. Your vet is obviously not experience with small dogs!!! And I am a GROOMER. You can bathe your dog up to as much as everyday even if you use the right shampoo and conditioner. Bouncer gets bathed every 3 to 4 days and has NOT ONE SINGLE skin problem. Perfect condition I must say. So I wouldn't listen to what your vet is saying, especially on the food. It is VITAL that your puppy gets nutrition. Just be harsh about not feeding from your hand. Get some canned food and place it on a plate on the floor. Give it one bite on your finger to taste, then entice it to eat the rest on it's own. Eventually, the pup will give in. But PLEASE don't let this dog go 4 days without eating. You just might be paying for it with a hole in the ground with your puppy's name on it and I know you and your family don't want that. Hope that helps you!

| I am glad your little one is doing better and just feeling a little puny from the vaccination. Im a little concerned with the vet's statement that these little one's at such a low weight can go without food that long. Their sugar levels can get out or sort and can cause hypoglycemia. I agree with them learning real quick that the spoiled treatment is better and that turns itself into a training issue with any pet. And regarding the bathing just once a month. I personally could not let Schatzie go that long. I have never seen her grow anything on her skin and she is bathed 3 times a week. I do however make sure she is double if not triple rinsed and I dry her completely. I agree that some dogs cannot be bathed as often.

| FOUR DAYS for a Yorkie to go without food is unheard of. Please make sure your dog eats at least once a day....even if he's trying to rule the house. Wouldn't you rather have a little Ceasar on your hands than a malnourished puppy? Otis gets a bath at least twice a month, as I'm sure many users here do the same with their Yorkies, and he has never had "things" growing on his skin. I would switch vets asap. |

| guish that post kind of scared me. both eating and bathing. i can't immagine any dog yorkie or any other going without food for that length of time. and......... i can't immagine being around a yorkie that hasn't been bathed for a month. my vet told me that yorkies hair is like humans and can be bathed every day if need be.

| :Puppy: My vet told me that i can bathe Gucci at least once a week. So i dont know about your vet saying just only once a month. Maybe he doesnt know about yorkies. Also my vet tells me that is she is not eating her dry food to try giving her canned food or baby food or chicken as long she eats something because yorkies get hypoglicemic very quick. Also she always recommends to have nutrical at hand. I hope this helps. |

| It's really interesting how vet advice can differ from one to the other (kinda like doctors, huh?) -- anyway, I was told by my vet not to let Sandy (who is bigger - over 10 pounds) go for more than a day without eating. I was also told it was safe to bathe her twice a week as long as I use a high quality shampoo and conditioner. (She gets dirty a lot) -- Sometimes I do bathe her twice a week and sometimes once, and not one skin problem, and the ones she came to us with are now gone. When my vet saw Tia and I asked about bathing, he said once a week is fine. I can't imagine letting a small dog go for four days without food, maybe they can LIVE that long without it but it certainly doesn't sound healthy. I would be careful with following that advice.

| Hello guys thanx for replying. and Yes all Vet comments different from one to another. thats why the tittle said "this might help" I wasnt also happy about not letting the dog eat for 4 days. For us we give the Dog a bath every 2 weeks or when starts to smell or gets dirty when we take him out. We Comb his hair every other 2 days. we being looking for the right shampoo. I rather take advice from Yorkie owners than a vet who has to deal with different animals all the time. Thanx guys for all the help I appreciated. |

| I have a friend breeder (she has been breeding for a long time and has over 20 dogs) and the vet the works in her kennel said it is not uncommon and unheard of for a yorkie to go for a few days without eating (donnou about 4 days tho), specially when it suffers changes in its routine. If the stools are ok, there is no vomiting but the yorkie is just not eating he or she doesn;t have to be sick or with a problem. But i would definetly try canned soft food...dogs really love it Keep in mind yorkies are very sensitive animals...another thing, nutrical or other suplements like it, are not a MUST for every dog. None of my dogs ever needed it, and were all healthy... Just really, be carefull with spoiling him to much and hand feeding, you have to show you are the alpha, also as per feeding, teach him to eat at the right time, i used to remove the food within 1 hour and only offered again at the next meal time, now Mr. Mojo eats withing 10 minutes About baths, i personally recoment at least 7 or 8 days between baths, that is because excessive bathing may strip the skin of its protective oils and create conditions for skin problems...i know yorkie owner (and breeders) that only bathe their yorkies every 2 weeks (i have done this myself) but it is up to you to decide what is the frequency of baths... |

| I am glad I found this thread. I have handfed my dog since she was a puppy. She is 13 months old now. Since I am going to make a trip very soon, I have been trying to make her eat on her own these days without any success. Just a little while ago I mixed some chicken broth and some canned food with her kibbles (the first time) and now I am waiting to see whether she will it it when she is hungry. I don't want to give her people's food because I am afraid when I am at friends houses I will have trouble to find food for her. She does not eat rice or noodle, just meat or egg. Also, it looks like she does not like dogs food. She spits it out a lot of time and only swallows it when she is hungry. I was so unhappy and thought my dog was the only one who had to be forcefed. I will try to let her being hungry for tonight and tomorrow morning to see whether she will eat her food on her own. Cathy |

| I know I posted yesterday on this and tried to be very diplomatic in what I said. Trust me, you don't want to know what I really think about the advise your vet gave you. Anyway...Im just going to add one more thought onto this thread. When I had Half-Pint, my dream Yorkie who became ill and my personal vet was out that day so I had to use the other vet that shares his office he told me this. "Give Half-Pint this drink every half hour. I've kept dogs alive for days on this stuff". Wanna know what happened? Half-Pint died within two hours. I am sorry, but vet's are human, they are not God. We can put as much trust into them as need be, but if you ever feel like something just don't seem right, find another vet. Think about it, most humans weight what? 130 - 180 pounds? What would happen if we went 4 days without food? We'd be feeling pretty darn crummy, think about a small little Yorkie. No way is going this long without nutrition going to keep a Yorkie healthy, barely alive, and suffer needlessley. Follow your heart and your brain when it comes to finding a vet who cares and is truly knowledgable about the Yorkie breed. PLEASE!!!!!

| I fed my yorkie a full meal this morning and some at noon. She also ate more than half of the biscuit this afternoon. I have only tried not to handfeed her tonight to see whether she will eat on her own when she is hungry. No, I never let her be so hungry that she would get sick, just hungry enough so she will go to eat on her own. She has come to her bowl a few times but just smelled her food then walked away. She does get Nutri Cal though. Cathy |
