| Need Help and/or Advice Hello, I am new and just stumbled across this great site by accident. I recently heard of a puppymill owner that was aware she was going to be busted by animal control so she just started selling off her dogs for $50 each. I was only able to get a yorkie, although I tried to get more before the other millers rushed in. This little yorkie is supposed to be 3yrs old and she is most likely pregnant now. I noticed when I first got her that she was a little unsteady but I had chalked it up to her atrophied back legs from being stuck in a little cage her whole life. But even after almost 2weeks of care her balance is still off. I notice that she kinda wobbles when she first wakes up and sometimes she acts like she just doesn't even see me. I have a vet appointment but its not for another two weeks because they wanted her to gain some weight last time. She is gaining weight now but she refused to eat at first. We had to mix in people food before she would touch it. This dog was in truely horrible shape coming to me. Her eyes were so badly matted they bled. Her hair was so greasy and gross that if you picked it up it would stay! Nails curling under. Teeth a mess. Hernia in her thigh/abdomen area. She is already doing better but this off balance thing is really starting to scare me. I want to help her, I just don't know how. I don't know what it could be. I have never even owned a small dog so I don't know what they are prone to or what illnesses I should be looking out for either. Can anyone dole out some suggestions or maybe someone knows what could be wrong with her? |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | This is just....heartbreaking . I feel so bad for what this little girl has been through. She is safe with you now. I'm guessing her health will be a long road ahead of her, but mistreated dogs really can and do bounce back. I wonder if the vet would think it helpful to give her a B12 shot, or a steroid shot, just to boost her up a little. What about having her lay on a heating pad, on your lap, to loosen up her legs a little? Would that help any? If her legs are indeed atrophied, it will take a while to rebuild muscle tissue. Also, her tendons etc could be very tight due to loss of mobility. Down the road, water therapy may help her. As far as food....go slow until you get to know her tummy. Does she like peanut butter? If fats are okay for her, then give her a few treats of peanut butter a couple/few times a day...have her lick it off your finger...it's a good little bonding thing too . Also, try sprinkling Parmesan cheese on her dog food....Parm is nice and pungent and can increase their interest in food. Once she stabilizes, you may be able to try giving her some food supplementation if the vet is okay with it (like, Puppy Meatballs or something). Do you know yet if she is pregnant? If she is not far along...maybe spaying her now would be best for her? Please keep us posted...this is a VERY special little girl.

I second that! Also if you can get her into a vet sooner I think I would. Bless your heart for rescuing this little girl. Your post brought tears to my eyes. I am so grateful for people like you that are able to bring joy into these poor babies little lives. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

| Update... After many repeated attempts to contact her breeder I finally got a call back today...guess it must have been the message threatening animal control... She told me that Abby had a severe infection while pregnant with her last litter. She got sceptis? I am confirming with the vet tomorrow when they are again open. The infection entered her bloodstream and attacked her brain. She had a seizure that put her into premature labor, killing all but one puppy. The breeder actually gave her antibiotics and even though they didn't think she would live she did. But it left her with nervous system issues. She actually told me that I had no reason to complain because she was a lot worse right after it happened and she barely noticed it now! This little dog can hardly walk straight! Even when sitting still herhead sways. I cant imagine what she was like at first!! I was told Abby couldn't walk or do much for almost 3mon! Breeder said she doesn't see how she could have gotten pregnant during that time but its pretty certain she is and it definately was before I got her!! She is 3, almost 4yrs old and has had 4-6litters (she didn't know for sure as she doesn't keep records!). Her last litter was 6mon. ago and was the one that almost killed her. Breeder kept the one surviving pup for breeding. Sad really. But, according to the breeder, Abby is as healthy as she can be and the balance issue may be for life. I am going to confirm tomorrow with the vet that saw and still do a blood panel with my vet. It will be good to know for sure. She is turning into such a sweet little dog. She has caught hold of so many peoples heartstrings that everyone is waiting for the final word. Funny how one little misused dog can bring so many together Thank you all for the great advice. I did get a sooner apointment with my vet aswell. You guys are great!! I don't know if I will be able to keep Abby in my home as I have two very rambunctious bigger dogs that I am afraid will hurt her on accident (because she cant catch herself of wobble out of the way when around them). But I know if I am fortunate enough to be able to provide her a home, I have a great place to learn more about this happy little breed!! |
