| PROIN question My little 10 year old has a history of bladder stones and pancreatitis. He has started having a leakage problem. The Vet did an Xray and Ultra sound as well as running tests on his urine. Crystals are present; but no stones were observed. The Vet has recommended PROIN for the leakage. Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of this drug. He is already on RX to control the stones. He is also on a very special diet. They assured me that Proin would not interfere with his other meds or make the other medical problems worse. They are suggesting liquid form because of the small doage. Dosage recommended was .3ml twice a day for 12 pound male yorkie. If you have experience; Any side effects? Pill or liquid form? How much did your little one weigh and what was the dosage? How did you get him to take it? Would appreciate your feedback. I am so afraid of making a mistake with him and I would never forgive myself if I did anything to hurt him. Thanks for your help. |

| My 12 lb. Yorkie female was on proine for years. She took 1/2 pill twice daily. I wrapped it in a pill- pocket or a piece of soft cheese. Good luck with your little guy; this drug worked wonders for our Peach-girl.

| Proin is a really cool drug. The way it works is pretty interesting. There are side effects just like with any drug. There are recent reports on the internet about it being connected to stroke in animals (the human equivalents can cause stroke in people and it was pulled from the market). I couldn't tell you whether or not this has actually been confirmed though. I doubt it. Does your vet think the benefit of giving a drug outweighs the risk at this point? That is really the best indicator of whether or not you should use it. If it's just a little dribble here and there, then it probably isn't worth it. If his skin is getting irritated or if it happens all the time, etc. then it is probably best to go ahead with it.

| another proin question Thanks for all of the feedback. I have done more research and have read alot about possible strokes. If I decide to put up with the "little dribble" here and there (it is very inconsistent) that ocurrs maybe once or twice a week...and don't use the medicine will I be doing him any harm? Is leaking a major health problem or just an inconvience for the owner??? The vet precsribed it after I made a comment about the leaking; Don't know if he is doing it for his health or MY convience. No doubt, his health is far more important than MY convience!! I will continue to monitor the stones/crystals through the urine tests...but, I am starting to get a little afraid of this medication, even though the vet reassured me that there are not any dangerous side effects. What do you think? |

| Hi! My 4.5 pound baby is on PROIN- she takes 1/4 of a pill every other day- I have now started to have to crush it though and mix with food because she refuses to take it and will spit it out of anything- I am going to switch to the liquid as soon as I run out of pills because I think it will be easier (probably more expensive though!) So far we have not had any side effects and it has worked wonders. For us, incontinence was bad for both of us- she was peeing in the bed 4-5 times a night at its worst, which meant I was doing TONS of laundry and she hated being wet. So I feel we are both happier now that she is on the meds.

| For an occasional dribble, I wouldn't give medication. But, if like my Peach girl, it was a lifestyle issue (constantly wet), definitely the way to go. Like, I said, she took it for years (probably 8) with no problems. When we tried to go off, she began dribbling again. I wonder if females are worse?
