Proin is a really cool drug. The way it works is pretty interesting. There are side effects just like with any drug. There are recent reports on the internet about it being connected to stroke in animals (the human equivalents can cause stroke in people and it was pulled from the market). I couldn't tell you whether or not this has actually been confirmed though. I doubt it.
Does your vet think the benefit of giving a drug outweighs the risk at this point? That is really the best indicator of whether or not you should use it. If it's just a little dribble here and there, then it probably isn't worth it. If his skin is getting irritated or if it happens all the time, etc. then it is probably best to go ahead with it.
