| Stool too big to pass? Chelsea was miserable when I got home from work last night. She had tried to pass an extremely large stool, and was able to get a little pushed out but the rest was too big for her to expel and was stuck partway in/out. She and I worked together to solve the immediate crisis and then I bathed her little bottom for her. It was so red and irritated looking I could've cried for her. This isn't the first time this has happened with one of my pups (although it's not very common, thank goodness!!). Normally their stools are all small and firm. What causes this to happen? What can I do to help prevent it?

| Aww, poor girl. I'm not sure what to tell you. I know Bandit (banditsocks2) had a 'butt infection' a few weeks back and the vet had to put him on antibiotics for a few weeks. It was also all red and swollen like you describe. Sorry I don't know the proper term for it. lol. Poor girl, hope she feels better soon.

| Awwww, bless her little heart...or should I say bottom! With humans, you'd use a stool softner...Why not give the vet a quick call, and ask if they have something available, for her...I have a client, w/a cat, that had a spinal injury, and can't potty for himself...When I pet sit for her, I have to catherize the kitty, to empty his bladder, and manipulate the stool out of his bottom...I also administer some thick green liquid, that I believe is a stool softner...However, w/this he also gets a tiny pill that I believe is for heartburn...So you'd need to ask all these questions...Hope you get some resolution for your baby... |

| That's the same way with one of my puppies. He is usually fine, but sometimes I see that he has trouble getting it out. One day I noticed it was taking unusually long to get it out, so we had to work together (I had to push the muscles around it) to get it out of him. I closely watched the next time he went and he was fine? My vet recommendd me to just feed canned pumkin but I don't because it only happens once in awhile. I'm also curious on what's causing this, when my other puppy is totally fine and goes fast. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | That happened the other day to Pixie and after I cleaned her up her little but was so red. I put a little vaseline on her and it was much better the next day.

I don't think this is an infection. It's just the stool is too big for her to squeeze out (sorry, couldn't think of a better way to put it ) so it stretches her little hiney and makes it all irritated.

| When Sammy was sick this summer with diahrea we went to the vet and she said to put A&D ointment on him. It's the stuff for human babies diaper rash. That helped. Hope your little one is better! |

I didn't think about using a stool softener. In this case, I don't think it would've helped since the stool was too far along and already stuck in her rectum. That kitty you petsit for sounds like he must have awesome parents who really love him! That's amazing. This only happens a few times a year between all my pups combined, so it doesn't happen often at all. Because of that, I hate to add supplements or other things to their diet just yet. I am going to make a mental note to ask the vet about it and see what he suggests. I just hate thinking of how long Chelsea was suffering before I got off work yesterday.

| Awww, your poor girl. The same thing happened to my Moka a few weeks ago. I wonder if sometimes they don't swallow some hair from licking themselves that gets all hung up in the end of the process. That's what looked like was my girl's problem. On the other hand my Mylee eats all kinds of mulch, sticks, dead leaves, grass, etc., and it comes out undigested. You would think she would be the one with a problem, but she must have a colon of steel!

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Bonny, this has happened to Louis a couple of times. I do partially serve home cooked meals. I believe this happens when Louis has too much meat in his meal, he needs some vegetable matter (more so than my others) to keep his stool from being too hard. I know exactly how you felt.....I felt the same way about Louis...poor babies! Hope you figure this out and Chelsea doesn't have this problem again.

I do give them frozen green beans as a treat (they all love 'em), but I don't give them on a regular basis. Do you think it would help if I started feeding those more often?

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Green beans might help but, I don't know if green beans contain as much fiber as other veggies do. I give mine sweet potatoes in their home cooked meals. I know there are also sweet potato treats....maybe that would help her, along with more green beans. I know green beans won't hurt her. My fil's fox terrier has a weight problem and their vet says give her a half a can of green beans a day. She loves to eat and the green beans satisfy her hunger without adding too many extra calories.

| Andy had this problem as well. Unfortunatly we were walking down a side walk on a busy street. Here he was on the grass between sidewalk and the road and I'm on all fours trying to help him get it out lol. I really didn't care what people in the cars thought I was focused on Andy and he was my main concern.
