Default Stool too big to pass?

Chelsea was miserable when I got home from work last night. She had tried to pass an extremely large stool, and was able to get a little pushed out but the rest was too big for her to expel and was stuck partway in/out. She and I worked together to solve the immediate crisis and then I bathed her little bottom for her. It was so red and irritated looking I could've cried for her.

This isn't the first time this has happened with one of my pups (although it's not very common, thank goodness!!). Normally their stools are all small and firm.

What causes this to happen? What can I do to help prevent it?
