| Leptospriosis My youngest yorkie had a terrible reaction to her lepto shot. All of my 3 yorkies had to get shots. My youngest got her shot in the middle so we were they for a good 10 minutes after she received her shot. We got in the car and just pulled out the driveway and she goes sick. I figure she was just nervous, so I continued. Got down our street about 5 minutes later, she puked again. By this time I am thinking something is not right. I pulled in my driveway, put my two other dogs in the house and locked up. Got back in the car, called the vet and drove back. It was during rush hour too so there was so many cars, I alway ran the red light. She was so pale and mellow. I had to snap my fingers just to keep her awake. I finally got to the vet and she was loosing her bowels. I took her in and the lady at the desk, looked at me and said, let me get a towel. In my head, I am thinking just take my dogs. Either way she made it and she is fine. They had to give her a shot of benderyll and one shot of steriods. They said everytime that she gets the shot she is alergic to, she will have to get one shot of benderyll and one shot of steriods. Basically more money for me. Anyways how can I convinence my vet not to administer the shot to my youngest. The other two are perfectly fine with it. My dogs never get boarded, if they go for a walk its around the neighborhood. They will be going to a grooming in the new year (Grooming now, comes to the house). Any suggstions?? Thanks |

| Lepto is normally NOT recommended for yorkies for this very reason unless there is a severe outbreak in your area.

| Lepto is a non-core vaccine. It is usually not recommended unless the disease i prevalent in the area. This is especially important for toy breeds who have a high reaction hate to this vaccine. There is really no convincing involved. A dog should not have a non-core vaccine if they have had a life threatening reaction to it. Reactions can get worse the more the shot is given. My girl had a very similar reaction, just a bit worse. No way would her vet attempt it (and I couldn't imagine allowing anyone to).

You tell him no or you are going elsewhere. Mean it or go elsewhere. Our dogs are our responsibilities before our vets. We need to have relationships with them that are two sided or one sided because we can count on them 100% if you don't know better. People need to stand up for their dogs just like you would your child. Good luck. | |

| FYI, your dogs who have not had a reaction could have a reaction to it at any time. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | My babies files are all marked at the vets that they do not get the Lepto shot. I would find a vet who realizes the risk and won't give it to any of your babies. I am glad she was ok.

| We actually had an "disagreement" with our "old" vet because of this very issue. It wasn't the reason we stopped, but just added another issue. We specifically requested no lepto and the vet "in a very non-chalant" manner dismissed our concerns. We actually had to basically say, that if we were going to continue the relationship then "NO LEPTO". We have 5 and none of ours get lepto anymore. Piper (at the time our smallest) always got sick after her vaccinations. Two years ago, when we learned of the issues with lepto, we had them stop and luckily she hasn't had any issues at any vaccination since. While this doesn't mean that they will NEVER have adverse reactions, it is at least one more step to helping to prevent them. Just as Ellie May mentioned, it's a non-core vaccination. I don't get a malaria shot, my risk of getting it is extremely low in Indiana, so why would I get my babies shots for something that is most likely, unlikely for their environment. | I did not get Lepto shots for either of my boys. The Vet Tech at my vet's office has a Yorkie who crashed after receiving it. They saved him because he was still at the vets for the day while VT was at work. My vet only gives 1 vaccine a week so you know which shot they had a reaction to.

| Jackson had the SAME reaction as a 12 week old pup. And he wasn't 'tiny' by any means either. He was already 6lbs at that point. I thought I was losing him! I remember being sooo scared. Never again will he get Lepto.

| Just tell your Vet "NO". I will be having this same conversation on Monday. My little one is due for his booster and since he's no longer a puppy the booster goes from DHPP to DHLPP. My Vet is usually pretty good about these conversations, so we'll see what happens.

| Sammy doesn't get the Lepto vaccine. He gets rabies, Parvo and Distemper vaccines. That's it. Plus his blood work. |

| Harry doesn't get the lepto vaccine either. There have been no cases where we live so I see no reason to put him through that. |

| Leptos is a hot topic on another list that I belong too. Now rearing it's ugly head in in some parts of the US. Most of us are aware of the adverse reaction in can cause in Toy breeds. However, one must make an informed decision on whether or not to have your dog innoculated against it. Research whether or not you are in a geographical area where Leptos is on the rise. Number of cases in relatively close period of time. Based on the data, you decide you'd rather take the chances of the vaccine over the chances of your pup contracting the disease, there are ways of minimizing the reaction. Have your vet administer a Benadryl vaccine prior to the Leptos. About 1/2 before. Once the Leptos vaccine is given, stay in the vets office for approximately 45 minutes after is given.
