Senior Yorkie Talker | Rimadyl? Is it safe?!?! Bella just got her girl parts out, baby teeth taken out, and microchipped. The vet gave her rimadyl because she is a sore little thing. She seems to be doing great but I wanted to take the time to look at the side effects of rimadyl. I was horrified when I read these awful stories of their pups passing because of a reaction to this medication. I know that 15 million dogs take this a year after researching I just want to make sure she is going to be ok. Has anyone else used it? She is on her second pill and I want her to be comfortable and not in pain but not if there is a chance she could have a reaction to it. I would realllllly appreciate some feedback if you have the time or know more about it. Thanks!

| Yes, there is a chance that she could have a reaction to it, but it is important that she isn't in pain. Usually drugs are worth the risk... If she had preop bloodwork and everything was normal, she should be just fine. Because it's only for a few days, the risks are pretty low. Long-term use (weeks to years) would concern me much more. You can get an alternative if you're really nervous, but as long as she is doing well on it, there really isn't any reason to.

| Any dog can have a reaction to drugs. Many have used Rimadyl without isssues. Some have not. IMHO The most important thing when you use any drug for your furbaby, is to read the possible and known side effects and learn what to watch for in a possible reaction. Ask your vet AND read the insert for the drug/ or on the web you can search the drug name. It is NEVER a bad idea to know exactly what you are giving your furbabies and be aware of known issues so you can react if there is a problem.

| Paddy took Rimadyl once per day for a day or two after he sprained his foot. He didn't have a problem with it. The dose for yorkies is pretty small. It is basically the dog friendly version of ibuprofen (advil or motrin) and the possible side affects/ are similar to those humans can get from NSAIDS. If she is tolerating it its important to keep on as recommended by the vet because in addition to reducing pain it will also reduce post operative swelling. If all heals up well she shouldn't need it for very long. What is really scary is if they get a hold of human meds. Paddy ate half a human motrin once because he vaccuumed it off the floor before my hubby could bend to pick it up right after he dropped it. He spiked a fever and was lethargic. The vet had to give him injections and stuff to protect his poor stomach lining. He the pooped bright orange diarrhea for a week!! But I was happy to deal with that as long as my little orange pooper was ok!! ha. Hope Bella feels better soon!!

Senior Yorkie Talker | Thank you everyone for your responses, she is doing well and a lot more chipper now. I think now being on it for four days it looks like she isn't going to have a reaction to it. I was just so nervous when I read about all horror stories and in particular I read three stories about yorkies that passed from a reaction. Thanks again for all the help!
