Hair Grooming Q. Hi all, I didnt know where to post this, so I am posting on health and diet... Ok, my doggy is 6 months old and I have not gave him any hair cut yet, except his ears and belly and butt. So he has a long back hair (about 3 inches) and head hair that I tie for him daily. I have to brush my doggy every day with 2 kinds of brushes and a 2 sized comb and yet, his hair still gets very matted very close to his skin daily. He is ok since I brush him daily. But god knows what he would look like if he wasn't brushed daily. I enjoy brushing him, but he doesn't. ha ha. well, sometimes, I dont enjoy it much either b/c he keeps on wanting to run away. Do your doggies hairs get that matted easily daily too? Or is it just mine? Do you brush them daily too?? Should I give him a puppy cut? Do any of you know how much dog grooming costs? Thank you.

Hair cuts I used to try to brush mine everyday, but it is sooo hard. I work a lot, and my retired husband is home with them most of the time. I used to try and keep their hair longer, but if you don't brush them a lot, then forget about it. So, now I keep their hair short, just their face hairs are long. I also now groom them myself, because for two dogs, it is too expensive. Most places I know charge around $40 each. So I got some good clippers and experimented on them, poor things. lol But they like it better when I do it anyway, because they don't like to be left anywhere. It's pretty easy to cut, especially if you have it done professionally first, and then before it grows out too much, start cutting it. They stay really still for me...they are good little girls and I talk nicely to them while I am doing it, so they like it. Good luck!

huh...? How can I tell if it's silky or cottony? I dont think it looks silky and shiny, so is that cottony? What is brusing the coat dry? I brush him when he is dry, yes. I use regular doggy shampoo and then some conditioner...

I comb my gracie every day keeping my fingers close to her skin in case of mats. I choose to do it late in the evening as she snoozes. Puppy cuts are the way to go if your baby has a cotton or wooly coat as Gracie does. I have her groomed every 6 weeks: cost between 40-45.

You should not brush a dry coat. If you have conditioner you can mix a little of it with some water and put into a spray bottle and spray the pups coat while you are brushing. This will also help to loosen the mats. It sounds like it may be the puppy coat that is matting close to the skin, or your little one may be a cotton coated pup. My puppies are almost 6 months old now and they are changing from the puppy coat to the adult silk coat, but they also get tiny mats close to thier skin. By spraying and brushing a little at a time we get most of them out without hurting the little ones.

Thanks you guys. Maximus is over 6 months now and his puppy hair was actually silkier than his new coat that's bluish silver color that is coming out, whihc always gets matted. I think I am stuck with a bad hair yorkie! oh no But it's ok, we can manage Does any of you know where I can find instructions on how to give a puppy cut, on line I mean? I know some of you guys cut your own doggies hairs. I am probably not gonna do it myself, at least for the first time, no. But I want to read about it. B/c I dont feel comfortable leaving him there at the salon for hours with strangers. Plus, he will be terrified with all the scissors and clipper nosies. I do cut his ear, belly, feet, nails, etc. But I dont know exactly how I should go about giving him a cut in the future, so if you guys know any tips or where I can read it, Please let me know. Thank you.

Hi Maximus....on the yorkshire terrier club of america website they give a lot of tips for grooming (http://www.ytca.org/frame_index2.html) and clipping (http://www.ytca.org/grooming_clips1.html) even if your puppy has cottony coat, understanding better how to treat his kind of coat will help you and him achieving a better looking coat (and less struggle) ... Also, make sure the coat is not completely dry when you brush, like mmyorkies said, spray a little bit of conditioner on the coat (there is also a lot of detanglers made specially for this) to help get the mats out, also using the right brush helps (pin brush with a rubber backing and without balls at the ends), and finishing up my combing the coat with a metal comb. Hope the links help you..good luck!
