| Both dogs are sick AGAIN!! Both Bentley and Sadie are now sick. I wrote this whole rant once and it ddin't send. They first got sick over Labor Day weekend with Bentley throwing up at my mom's house. We left and took them home to be closer to a vet and the next morning Sadie threw up. We went to the ER and got them well again. antibiotics and anti-vomitting meds ext. Bentley even had x-rays for possible obstruction to reveal that he was very backed up. They both got better and were fine. we chalked it up to a raw diet spoiling on our drive up there and switched them from the bland diet while they were sick to Orijen fish and potato. Then...we went on an overnight trip and left them at home with my BIL. They were in a 4x4 x-pen and fed and took out plenty. A huge thunderstorm came through and they got diarrhea. Bentley had been having an occasionall loose stool we were watching before we left. Gave propectalin and he got better. Now he's still having loose bowel movements and Sadie started throwing up last night. including her entire dinner several hours after eating it. They don't chew their food, they just inhale it. i've been trying to get them to slow down and putting balls in their dish to make them, but they still inhale it. could that be causing all this recent GI? I have them at my vet's at work with me. hopefully they will get them better for good. i'm so spent both mentally, emotionally, and tired of cleaning up puke and poop, tired of spending all our savings on sick puppies. i just want this overwith and better so we can be happy and not always worrying. between GI and Sadie's allergies and her feet problems i can't afford much more vet care. i mean i can, but it's really putting a giant dent in our savings and taking a lot from our money. over 400 last ER visit and i already owe 80 for Sadie's foot on top of today's help. just ranting and venting, you all know i'd do anything for them...i may have to get care credit or something soon. i just hope they get well. i wanted a fecal on at least Bentley to rule out giardia and coccida. some of this is going around in our daycare/lodge...i'm almost ready to blame this place for their sickness because other dogs here keep getting sick. i'm so frustrated, going for broke, and tired of this. had to vent. please send ur prayers up and encouragement. bless the hands of the dr. so she can help them get better. and please if you have advice let me know. |

| I'd venture to say the daycare is a strong possibility because they both get sick at the same time. I'd hold off from taking them there for a good few weeks and see how it goes. If this is attached to where you work, then clothes and shoes may need to be changed before walking in the house somehow. Showering as soon as you get home wouldn't be a bad idea either. Their sterilization techniques may not be the best... If it's determined that it isn't this, anything in the yard, etc., then I would be changing diet to something with a moderate protein level and a low to moderate fat level. Not all dogs do well on high protein...

| My Brady was on the frozen raw, and after time he started to get loose stools alot. My vet recommended taking him off because she felt his stomach couldn't handle the raw. He hasn't had a problem since I switched him to NOW. I do sprinkle a little stella and chewey on the top. He has no problems any more....

I agree. My guess is the daycare. I just recently posted something along those lines...I really hate for my pups to be around strange pups. Too many things for them to get.

| Yup, I bet it's daycare, too, especially since giardia and coccidia are going around there. |

| i feel like they aren't cleaning very well and other dogs have gotten giardia and coccidia lately and i'm guessing it is from here. i'm upset about it too. i haven't brought them back since the first time Bentley got sick on labor day, but that doesn't mean he still doesn't have something from way back then...prayers. |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | I've seen bowls with a dome in the middle so the food goes in a ring. Supposed to slow them sown a little. But I don't think gulping is the main problem right now. |

| Do you feed kibble or canned? Lady used to eat so fast I'd have to burp her like a baby after meals or she would throw it up again. I started putting her kibble in a Buster Cube and it solved the problem. |

| it's kibble now. i will have to get something to make them eat slower...however: vet suspects the presence of either giardia, coccidia or salmonella. since i have also had some GI upsets and pain in the abdomen off and on she thinks one of them is very likely and i prob. have a mild case of something too. she actually said if the fecal doesn't show giardia or coccidia then it might be cheaper for me to get a fecal done on myself to see about salmonella. wouldn't that just suck?? |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | So... are the dogs eating something that you are also eating? Or are you handling any raw meat? Especially if you're handling raw chicken -- are you reserving a cutting board just for raw meat, and using a different one for everything else? I always thought it was silly to have two cutting boards until I picked up a case of salmonella myself. |

| I still wonder about the daycare since it's sporadic. But there are a lot of things that raw meat can carry that can cause GI upset. Maybe it just isn't clearing... Some pups are just more sensitive than others and some meat isn't as safe as others...

| i used to feed them frozen raw. i have a feeling they got sick last Labor day because some of their raw food unthawed on our hour long trip and gave them bacteria or salmonella. since i handled it and am always cleaning up their messes chances are i may have picked it up as well. i mean no i don't roll in their poo, but still it doesn't take much to make a human sick from fecal or raw contaminations. edit to add: and it might be that my tummy aches are totally unrelated to theirs but ya never know. i'm fine most of the time, occasional diarrhea after a meal, strage abdominal pains and some gas/bloat but that might just be irregularity from a change in schedules in our home and a recent trip. i always get sick after traveling from the different food/environment. | Sorry to hear about the sickness in your house. What a stress! I know what that is like...my little guy has been sick almost constantly since we adopted him. Took a lot of time and money and finally going to UT to finally figure out what was going on. The emotional stress is soooo hard. Everytime I think it might be nice to have companion for Snickers to play with (so he'll stop harassing me to constantly play 95% of the day...we do have to get some work done around here! haha) I don't know if I could possibly deal with having another dog who might end up with the kind of health problems...or even half of the kind health problems he has! I really feel your pain! I have two suggestions: First, if your dogs are gulping down their food...I think getting a puzzle or interactive toy for them to feed out of is a great answer. Slows them down and gives them something to do! Stimulates their mind, which is great. I feed at least 2 of 4 meals in a Kong every day...my dog loves the challenge and NEEDS it, because he's constantly bored (even though I'm home and playing with him all day long...he's a troublemaker!) If it's kibble, maybe getting something like a ball that dispenses kibble would be good. As far as GI problems, if you haven't been to a specialist, you might want to consider it...or at least ask your vet about tests that might not be routine. Like I said, my dog has been sick constantly, and it wasn't until we took him to UT that they did a test that determined he had a colostrium overgrowth producing endotoxins. He's got MVD too, adding to his problems, but finding out about the colostrium overgrowth was something new to me that I had never heard of and was not something normally tested for, according to my local vet. |
