| 3/4 of a cup seems like a lot for a 5 month old but that is just going from my experience. Sophie Kate is 2 years old, weights 8 lbs and she gets 1/2 cup a day and maybe some steamed carrots along with it. Right now I am feeding Sophie Kate Halo which she seems to like. She is a little picky and will turn her nose up at food after about a month so we have a variety on hand.

The early research that convinced people of the myth of high protein damaging dog's liver was done on rats which are omnivores and their digestive system works entirely different than dogs which are carnivores. Rat's bodies are not designed to handle high protein the way dogs are. I am not aware of any research on dogs that points to high protein damaging dog's liver. I might be mistaken here, but in addition to using rodents, I believe the source of most of the protein was corn gluten, so it was pretty invalid regarding canines and high protein from meat on two fronts. High plant based protein is not good for any dog, healthy or not. High animal based protein will have no detrimental effect on a dog's liver, healthy or not. The better high protein foods derive most of their protein from animals. Here's a good article: http://www.peteducation.com/article....+1770&aid=1104

| Listen to Britster, she knows what she's talking about! I feed Miloh Orijen; the difference is very noticeable. Although many believe the price is high, you save in the long run as they eat less (being that it's a high quality food) meaning there's less trips to the store. You are feeding a better quality of food, so won't need to feed as much. Low quality foods are cheaper, but you have to feed more, so they are actually not cheaper.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | I agree with most of the posters here. Your dog is chubby, is indicative of no matter what brand of food you are feeding she is getting to much food for her activity level. At 5mths old you should be able to clearly and easily feel her ribs, and a tuck up at the loin. Razz at 6 lbs gets 1/4 c a day of food to 1/3 cup of food. However each day he also receives about 1/8th to 1/4 c of treats for obedience work. If we are very active in a day, say 1hr swimming, 1hr walking or more, then he gets a full cup of food for that day. I don't free feed any of my dogs once they are past 3mths old, their food is monitored and adjusted to their activity level. I feed raw, and occassionally will add some Orijen kibble into the mix. Plus they have breed appropriate supplements.

| I feed Taste of the Wild venison & buffalo. I leave it out all the time. So far they are not overeating or gaining weight, but I keep a close eye on it. Don't want them to become overweight.

| Our breakfast is 1/3 cup of Taste of the Wild around 7:00 and dinner is another 1/3 cup around 4:00. Of course we have our bedtime cookie, either a few SO Natural's or Natural Balance treats. |

| Trin7 did your vet recommend something they carried? I had Teegy on Royal Canin when I first got him because the breeder had him on that. I switched to Wellness puppy because the ingredients were better. I am now in the process of switching to adult food and I have also chosen Orijen. I am going with Orijen red but I may switch between that and their fish type too. |

| My Lucy doesn't eat very much. She does have mild liver issues so she gets Natural Balance Vegetarian for breakfast (with cooked carrots) and then I feed her a more medium protein meal for dinner - Wellness Limited Ingredient. She can tolerate chicken so I somtimes boil some chicken breast (with no spices or salt) and she gets Wellness canned chicken. She usually eats 1/3 cup dry of an evening and only a handful in the am.

As far as quantity, I think age and activity level play a big role. Kaji should be 7 lbs (he's a little chunky butt and weighing a little over 8 lbs). He's not very active due to our living situation. So, knowing he needs to lose weight, I am feeding him what a 6 lb dog should eat according to the chart on the back of the bag. He's eating EVO grain free right now, and when that bag is gone, he'll be eating Orijen.

| I free feed Canidae ALS. I bake them doggie treats b/c I don't like preservatives and I don't like that there are lots of recalls. When my girls are expecting they get Wellness Puppy, cooked liver, Natural Balance rolls, canned Wellness Puppy, cooked chicken breast. Also after they whelp I give them extra calcium, not a lot just a bit.
