Default Evo vs. TOTW

I've been noticing more drainage from Scarletts eyes and scratching lately and am wondering if she could have a grain allergy. I want to try a grain free food (she's currently on BB small breed puppy). Any thoughts on Evo vs TOTW. I know Acana is grain free, too- but it's not something they carry at the feed store.

Pro's/con's to each?

Evo was recently bought out by Proctor & Gamble (Iams, etc) so I'd be concerned about any changes they may be making in the near future. Taste of the Wild is a good food-- really good for the price! It's probably one, if not the, cheapest grainfree food out there. It's processed at Diamond Food Plant so as long as you're comfortable w/ that, I'd pick TOTW over Evo for now.

I tried Evo with Jackson and he wouldn't touch it, lol, I dunno why. Previous to the P&G buyout, I would have probably said Evo over Totw. TOTW is also now ethoyquin (sp?) free, so that's a good thing!

Fromm's carries a very good grain free food called Fromm's Surf & Turf...it's what I feed mine and they love it.

Natural Balance makes some 'Limited Ingredient Diet' dry food for dogs with allergies. They are also grain-free. I'm considering trying the Potato and Duck because my Snickers' eyes have been runny lately. Just another option for you to consider.

Evo is very high in fat. Some toy breed dogs have had elevated cholesterol while eating it so I'd steer away from it.

FYI, environmental allergies are much more common than food allergies.

Just thought I'd mention what my vet told me when I was discussing food allergies with him (it was in reference to our other dog, a mini schnauzer, but don't think that makes a difference). He said with a food allergy, a dog typically bites/ chews at their hind quarters while dogs who chew at their feet (like mine does) typically are suffering from environmental allergies.

He also said that dogs could use many human allergy products, the ones I remember are Benadryl (but has to be administered 3x a day), Zyrtec (1/2 a tablet for my 15 lb. dog), and Tavis D but that's hard to find now in stores he said.

My schnauzer's eyes run, but I always attributed that more to the poodle in her than much else...

Interesting. Lady has environmental allergies and also chews on her feet.

She gets 1/4 Zyrtec.

I have been feeding TOTW for over two years now and my kids are flourishing. It is an all life stages food - I have fed pregnant moms, nursing moms and pups. I generally buy the Wetlands formula (roasted fowl) and sometimes the High Prairie forumla (roasted bison). My guys just didn't like the Pacific Stream (smoked salmon/sweet potato) variety.

At the dog show in Atlanta today, I talked with a canine nutritionist who is close friends with the owners of the company - it is still a small two family owned business -- and until that changes I'll probably stick with the Taste of the Wild.

Now! is also grain free, and I find it pretty cost efficient. Watch out cause they also make Go! and that has grains in it... if you're looking for grain free Now! is a good option. My breeder is also on Natural Balance, a grain free forumla, I'm not sure which one though. I switched and Harley's eye goup stopped. It's started up a bit again recently, but I think it's more from stress (we're moving and packing), but his eye goup doesn't stink as bad as it used to.

Actually, Go! has one grain-free food (I feed it along with Acana/Orijen). It's called Go! Endurance. It's the most meat-filled highest protein content food from that line (of Go and Now) and the only one I'd feed.

Dog Food Reviews - Go Natural Grain Free Endurance - Powered by ReviewPost I totally love this food, or should I say Jackson loves this food. Lol. http://www.petcurean.com/index.php?page_id=44

It's really confusing because they call Now! their grainfree line, and Go is supposed to be their grain inclusive line. It's confusing how they do that. But anyways just wanted to point that out, if you ever wanted to try that version, it's less potato filled than the Now and higher in meat. I think Now! is render-free, whereas Go! is not?

Well that's good to know... I'm just switching Harley to the Now! adult. my pet shop doesn't carry the yorkie brand, so I'm just sticking with normal adult, I supplement with Trippet anyway. But I'll keep the Go! grain free in mind, cause eventually I want to show Harley in Agility, he may not get enough out of Now! when he's working really hard. He never gains weight, he burns his energy/food off really quickly... he's just a super hyper dog.

Farrah eats TOTW Wetlands because she loves fowl. Good Luck!

I've used both Evo and TOTW in the past with Sasha and she did very well on both. Before, I would've suggested Evo to be the better food, but now because of the P&G buyout, I'd recommend TOTW over Evo. I don't use either anymore because BB and BB Wilderness were easily available to me, plus I get an additional discount (I work at Petsmart) and both of my dogs are thriving on this food.

NOW! also has a small breed formula. I currently feed TOTW Roasted Bison and Roasted Venison and my dogs do well on it. However, I've been more and more interested in all natural/raw feeding. And I've been adding Stella and Chewy's freeze dried on top of their TOTW (shredded). I am now looking to introduce NOW!. I just bought a small bag and I'll add it a little at a time to the TOTW and see how they do!

But I'm not leaving TOTW because I am having any problems. I'm just more and more curious about raw feeding.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I had been leaning towards evo because of the extremely small pieces (in comparison to TOTW), but with the P&G buyout, I may have to rethink that one. Both of mine loved the samples of TOTW- it's just that Scarlett would bite once and swallow the very large pieces whole. I'll check to see if those other brands are available locally.

As for food vs environmental- She seems to have more of a generalized itching vs a specific area. I'm not ruling out environmental, but thought that because food is the only thing completely under my control, I would try that route first. Do you think I'm going about this backwards? I would like to try avoiding medication at this point if possible.
