Why Is Max Eating His Poop?
 

This is becoming a big problem. Max is eating his poop. It's not just that he's eating it. It's that he's so ridiculously fast that it's almost impossible for me to prevent it. Today i dove across the kitchen floor to try to stop him. He gobbles it up so very quickly.

Why is he doing this? Is this something he will grow out of? I remember Cooper did it when he was a puppy too, but I don't think he was this nuts about it.

He's eating Life's Abundance food, and believe me, he eats plenty of it so i doubt he's hungry!

Completely normal. Some do show a more "drive" for it than others. All dogs are going to be different. He may out grow it. There are also products out there to change the taste but I've never tried it as I don't like giving my dogs added things. Sometimes you just have to find a way to be quicker than him haha. I can't be quicker. We tag team. It's like an Olympic event to beat him to it.

You're right - all dogs are different. Rio has occasionally eaten her poop ever since she was a pup. She's 1 1/2 years old now and still tries to eat it from time to time. Bullet is almost 6 months old and has never shown any interest in eating his poop.

With Rio, I used to give her pineapple as I heard it makes their poop not as "appetizing" but it didn't really work. She still tried, and still sometimes tries!

Supposedly adding pineapple or yogurt will stop the behavior. I've always added yogurt to my dogs daily diet and never had a problem with coprophagia- but that could just be coincidence.

I was told a little bit of A1 sauce. I put it on my finger and let her lick it off. Believe it or not it really worked for us! Breeder told me this trick.

Thanks everyone. I may try some of these ideas. He's so fast I can't imagine adding a food to it will make a difference. I doubt he even smells it. He spins his body around to get it before it even hits the floor.:eek:

Thank you. I don't believe at all that any of that applies to Max. I have to call the vet Monday so I'll add this to the conversation.

First thing that I want to say is don't try to figure out why he is eating his poop since most of the time it really is a mystery that cannot be solved. :rolleyes: We can just fix it!

There has not been one dog that continued to eat their poop if you follow my instructions. Hardcore puppy mill rescues have stopped eating their poop with pineapple. Maria was a mill rescue who would spin while pooping and eat it before it would touch the ground and with time and pineapple she eventually stopped. But it took a while~it is not immediate. :)

Anyone that tells you that pineapple did not work was not either feeding enough, feeding a long enough time or was not consistent. In order for the pineapple to work its magic the digestive enzymes need to change in their intestines. This will take several days until he is no longer pooping warm loaves that he likes to snack on. :rolleyes:

When Max poops and tries to eat it don't freak out. This will cause him to think he needs to eat the poop because of your reaction. Once you start to pineapple regiment you will see improvement. But you NEED to follow exactly how I am instructing you. ;)

You need to purchase CHUNK PINEAPPLE~not crushed or tidbits. This is important so that you are talking about the same SIZE pieces. :thumbup:

Start by feeding 1 or 2 pieces of pineapple (Cooper can have it too) as a snack/treat between meals for a total of 3 to 4 pieces per day. Making sure that you give at least 3 pieces total per day. It will take several days for you to actually see Max begin to not want to eat his poop. The contents of the digestive tract needs to be pooped out and then replaced with pineapple poop.

After a few days you will notice that if he does pick up a piece of poop he will not try to woof it done. He might pick it up or even play with it but he should not eat it.

If he does continue to show interest then increase the pineapple by 1 or 2 pieces. Continue to watch him and pick up any poop immediately. Do not react other than to tell him to drop it.

I promise you that if you are consistent and feed him the pineapple EVERY day he will stop.

Let me also add that it is not unusual for a poop eating pup to pick up the pineapple poop and try hiding it once they decide it is no longer palatable. Why they do this I don't have a clue but eventually they will stop this too.

Check back here and let me know how it is going. But this will get you started to a nonpoop eating pup. :thumbup:

Do you have any tricks to get Ruby to stop eating the cat's poop? :eek:

Well, I'm not the YT Poop Guru, but, my dog trainer once told me that cat poop is a very tasty dog snack. I'm not sure if the pineapple will work in your case, unless the YTPG says it is ok to give to the cat.

Boots - we bought the bags of frozen pineapple chunks. I microwave them for 10 -15 seconds and the kiddos think they are getting frozen yummies. They absolutely love it and it really has changed Teddy's view of poop eating. He *sometimes* goes for it, but at least not his own and now only once in a while. YTPG was "on call" for indiscretions and we can't thank her enough!

That might work but I know my cat would never actually eat the pineapple, cats are usually pretty picky. I always have to keep my cat's litter box gated off because my boys try to sneak in there..:rolleyes:

I had this problem too when we got Max and Minnie. They were emaciated so I thought they had to in order to stay alive and it became a habit. But even when they got free fed and could eat as much as they wanted they didn't stop until I switched the food to Orijen. Since then they also stopped eating dirt... Imagine how much I like this food even if I have to pick up much more poop now...LOL! I was always on the run to catch any poop before they could get a hold of it... :eek:

I'm glad to hear this is common. Max is huge; i think he's about 5 pounds at 11 weeks. He's definitely getting enough food. I also believe I'm feeding him very healthy food.

I'll stop questioning and start the pineapple.

My M&Ms got always healthy food, some homecooked and some dry food like Blue, Flint River Ranch, Eagle Ranch, Royal Canine Prescription Diet Rabbit and Potatos and quite a few more I don't remember so I think it's not the 'health' factor alone but the one unknown ingredient that might be discarded undigested... I don't know what it is I just know that it works. It was not even intentionally b/c I got the Orijen mostly for Maggie which can't have any wheat, corn, oatmeal, soy and rice. The poop thingy is just a very welcome side effect.

Oh... and I tried the pine apple feeding unfortunately only Maxie and Minnie liked it and Maggie and Mikki didn't so it did not work in our case...

It is more changing the digestive enzymes and pineapple works well. But for those dogs that don't like it you can also give sweet potato, pumpkin and even spinach. Never give up there is always a way. ;)

I know nothing about cat so I cannot give you an answer. I'm wondering out loud if you could maybe add the pumpkin to the cat food? I would guess that the pineapple wouldn't go over well with a cat. :rolleyes:

LMBO!!! This was Izzy too...I mean she would poop, then JUMP forward then race back to eat it:animal36 :thumbdown...and if i tried to get her away from it. she wouls eat it on the run..ewwwwww!!! :eek:

she is almost 10 months now and i think she stopped at about 6-7 months old..Thank God!! Now she jumps forward but kicks her feet back instead..lol:thumbup:

DOes this work if she/he is eating the other dogs in the house poop. I have an Alaskan Huskie a Bichon and then Paris and she will not eat hers but the other dogs, should I feed them the Pineapple? I would love your help, as Paris loves to kiss us and it is grossing me out

I just got off the phone with the LSU vet and explained that Max is eating his poop. "Oh dear" was the reaction. She thinks that because phenobarbital increases appetite, this could be the reason. She told me to give lowfat treats throughout the day. I'm still giving pineapple. Lowfat treats won't help. If i baked him a whole chicken as a treat he could eat that PLUS his food.
