Aren't they the slickest little buggers, though. I swear they hold it until I am tied up for 5 mins. Cause that's when they'll go. I go looking to see what they are doing and low and behold....they are poop eating! |

Since I have somehow become the Poop Guru I have been doing a lot of research about how to stop the poop eating. Like Nancy said it all comes down to changing the digestive enzymes in their intestinal tract. It's not an immediate fix and you do need to be dedicated to the task. If you are going to try sweet potatoes I would buy the organic canned. Pumpkin would be pure packed pumpkin. I would think that you could even mix it up a little and give pineapple as a treat and mix the others into their food. |
Max left his poop on the floor this morning! He didn't even sniff it. I'm also finding that when he poops outside on the grass, he has no interest in eating it. It's only in the house. Also, no more pineapple for Cooper. He can't seem to digest it and vomited it:( |

Max is still eating his poop. He's not inhaling it and he's eating it much slower, but he's eating it. We will keep working on it. |
UGH! This is painfully slow, isn't it? Well, I think my one that WILL eat the pineapple is beginning to let the poop alone. But my other one who WILL NOT eat the pineapple.... This morning first thing he did was go poopy and walked away. GOOD BOY, right? Well, after breakfast he apparently had a bit more left in him because I went into another room for 1 min. and came back. And he's licking his lips. I could still smell poopy in the air but I'll be darn if I could find it ANYWHERE! I could only assume he ate it. :( |

It's slow, but let's keep working at it. Try one of the other method than the pineapple with the other dog. I've also found that if Max goes potty outside in the grass he leaves it alone. I'm not sure which will be faster - non poop eating or potty trained. |
Yep, I need to ask megansmomma how much sweet potatoe to try instead. He just won't eat the pineapple and when he does he throws up. I was taking him out to go poopy, at least at my lunch break. He's too quick to catch for first thing in the morning. As soon as his little paws hit the floor, he must GO! Anyway, when I started taking him outside (and I had this problem a few months ago) he seems to have trouble using the pee pads in the house. I think it's because outside he can go wherever he wants. So then that's the attitude he takes when inside. He seems to not be able to differentiate between the two. Although like Max, he'd leave the poopy alone if it was outside, I can't afford for him to not use the pee pads inside my home. |

The way the I gave it to mine was adding it directly to their food with a little warm water to make a thick gravy. I would take all the kibble that I was feeding then and put it into a bowl with about 3 tablespoons of pumpkin and run the water until it was hot and then slowly add a little water at a time until the pumpkin became consistent with gravy. Then I would divide the food into their bowls. They really loved it too and it didn't change the firmness of their poop either. ;) Karen I would suggest that you could try this with Cooper too since he is having a pineapple problem. But remember you need to be consistent with this too and feed at each meal for it to work. You can still feed the pineapple since none of this will hurt them and only add more of the ingredients that make the poop taste bad. Keep it up! You guys are doing great and it will work! |
Thanks, I'll PM you.:) |

Needing to bump up for all those poop eaters! |
Thanks. I saw the other thread. I hate to admit that Max is eating his poop more than ever. In fact, he's now also dining on Cooper's. I just ordered this Digestive Aids: Drs. Foster and Smith Dis-Taste Stops Coprophagy Stool Eating and am really hoping it helps us. |

We are trying fresh baby spinach added to their food. So far, no poop eating. Teddy only eats Daisy's poop and we think it's because she has a sweet potato based diet and IBD so he is getting undigested sweet potato. I am not permitted to add anything to Daisy's food per her specialist but he was OK with spinach. He then confessed he too had a dog that was a poop eater and I wanted to tell him about YT and the Poop Guru but I forgot! |
A note on spinach - it is a high oxalate veggie -- so not good for any dog that has had oxalate bladder stones. We are adding about 1 tbsp of chopped spinach to meals twice a day raw. They love it - Teddy eats his greens first. |
I think we need a poop eating club?? |

I'd also like to know how to handle Max on a behavioral issue. He knows it's "wrong" to eat poop. I say "no, no" and if it's in the house he won't eat it. But now, outside there is no way of stopping him. He now rings the potty bell to go out and find Cooper's poop. He won't find any because it has to be cleaned up at once. Oh, I could go on and on but I must run to the grocery store!! |

Just got home from the store and gave them a piece of spinach to see if they would eat it. Max took it no problem, Cooper spit it out. I stuck peanut butter inside one and wrapped it like a casserole and Cooper ate that. I don't think Cooper will eat it chopped up in his food. What are the amounts that they are supposed to eat? They are both 10 pounds. |
I feed about 1 tbsp of chopped baby spinach to all three of mine. Daisy is 7.5 lbs, Teddy 8, Barney 9.5. Mine eat it mixed in their food. On the behavioral thing - I taught Teddy the leave it command. It works and he greatly restrains himself on command. The problem is when I'm not around!! |

Also - should the spinach help firm up Coop's poop? It's somewhat firm but he could use a little assistance. Quote:
