UPDATE: Today is day 3 of the poop-free pineapple method. This morning he pooped and caught it mid air. However, he spit it out!! :D He then gobbled some of it, spit out some of it, and I cleaned the rest as quickly as possible. This is the first time that he realized something was different. Thank you so much! I really think this method is going to help us. |

Pineapple is forever 2 Attachment(s) In our house, the minute we stop pineapple, Teddy Bumpkins starts his bad acts. So it's become an every day treat, and all three can tolerate pineapple and love it. Here is Teddy with his daily dose. See how easy rehab can be?? |

Hmmm...will have to try this pineapple method. We have two Yorkies at home. The oldest has never been interested in poop but my 5 month old puppy on occassion likes to try her own or any kind of animal poop. I tried to figure out why she did it. It seemed atleast when eating her own poop she ate it when having an accident in the home and could care less about it if she went outside but it is so tough to really figure out why she does it. Will see if she'll eat some pineapple for me as a daily treat. So far she has turned up her nose to all fruits I have tried to feed her. |
Check out this article for possible reasons 20 Reasons Why Dogs Eat Poop (Coprophagia, Pica) My baby used to eat his own poop but only when he had an accident inside so we figured that he's hiding evidence. Once he's potty trained to go outside, this behavior stopped. He never tries to eat his poop outside. And I always pick it up with tp and flush down the toilet so my lawn stays clean and he's not tempted to eat it. |

I've read things like this before so recently I asked the board certified vet nutritionist and she told me that coprophagia is a behavioral issue and that it is a myth that it is related to nutrition. Pineapple works for us, Teddy smells better with pineapple breath, so whether it is a myth or not, I keep a steady supply of pineapple chunks in our freezer. I think I have no less than 3 bags at a time! |

Oh no, i bought the canned pineapple chunks in pineapple juice. I need to buy the frozen! |

Why I do frozen.. Quote:
I buy the frozen because it works better IMO. When I do canned, Teddy engages in his old ways. Frozen = no relapses. I'm not sure why, other than the pineapple in the can seems more processed. I just take them out every night before bed - 10 chunks (3 snacks for each dog plus one for the parrot) - and put them in a tupperware in the fridge - and use them the next day. |
The reason pineapple works is because it contains it enzyme called Bromelain, which is the same thing use in many meat tenderizers. This enzyme works by breaking down the protein in food and enabling the dog to digest it the first time around. If a dog smells undigested protein in the poop, he thinks this is nourishment and will eat the poop. Some dog foods have an easier to digest protein, and switching foods can stop poop eating as well. |
I was thinking if you all taught them to drink their pee you'd have self-cleaning Yorkies???? (Sorry, I couldn't resist!) :D |

Oh but let me tell you that the poop the second time around is much grosser than the first. There is nothing clean about it, trust me!! And when Teddy throws it up, I just cry. |

In my case, I do believe it's a behavioral issue. |

There was a mill rescue that it even worked for but it did take time and effort. She would spin in a circle and eat her poop before it even touched the ground. It grossed her foster mom out so much that she was in tears. So I walked her through several weeks of pineapple adjustments and we watched her as she slowly stopped eating poop. At first she would pick it up and hold it in her mouth. Then she started to hide it in her doggy bed. Her poop eating was behavioral as well. But she is no longer eating her poop! It did take about 6 weeks or so before she totally stopped but it did work  Please don't write it off as something that you cannot stop because it does not matter the cause. Hardcore poop eaters have been cured! Puppymill dogs are notorious poop eater and she was totally cured :) |

It's great to know that there is help for hardcore poop eaters! Maybe you need to open a rehab? :D |

To be honest I haven't spent enough time, more than likely. The sad part is, my biggest offender isn't real crazy about pineapple. I do have two that eat it but one of them more than the other. I know I do need to spend more time and be more patient. I may pick up some sweet potatoe for my "not to crazy about pineapple" guy and see if he prefers that more. The other thing I might do is I make them homemade frosty paws that I put a crushed banana in the mix. I might try some chunked pineapple instead? Maybe if I mask the pineapple in the yogurt, he won't know it? ;) |

I see this is going to take some time. I feel like i'm feeding him so much pineapple. He eats about 4 chunks throughout the day. |
