After reading this thread, I switched my puppy's food from Science diet to Royal Canine. Milo seems to like it alot better. I had no idea what went on in dog food. Thanx for all the info.

I plan to feed Gracie Innova EVO once she gets closer to 10 months. Some people complain because it is high calorie and protein but if you feed by the guidlines you shouldnt have problems with an overweight issue.

Hello: I'm new to Yorkietalk. This is my first mesage. I have a 2.5 pound, 4 month old Yorkie named Brady, we live in Ottawa, Canada. I found my biggest concern/headache with Brady has been what to feed her. We started off with Nutro Ultra puppy, she wasn't crazy about it...also tried Wellness, she absolutely hated the taste/texture...she won't touch it. The biggest thing for me was finding a high quality food with the best ingredients...no corn, no by products etc... I've ended up feeding Brady Royal Canin puppy food and fully plan on feeding her Yorkie 28. I also like to give her little treats with her food now and then such as banana and carrot. She's doing really well, has tons of energy and loves to play. I fully recommend this puppy food for Yorkies, the kibble is nice and small and she seems to love the taste. Check out the testimonials on the web from many thankful Yorkie owners - http://www.caninehealthnutrition.com/ Never thought I could love a little puppy so much! She's so adorable, can't wait to post some pics for all to see.

I just switched Honey from Nutro to Merrick and he loves it. The ingredient list is very good. I got him the Turducken and it has turkey, duck, whole grains fruits and vegtables. Honey can't get enough he wolfs it down. I did notice that it makes him poop 2x a day instead of 1x but I guess that's good for him.

Nutrical can be use everytimes you see the pup need it . It is used as a booster when the pup refuse to eat . My girls are 3 pounders of 13 and 15 months old and my vet recommanded to always have a tube just in case . Nutrical or nutripet should never be use like medication . If there are problems with the little one , always go to your vet .

Royal Canin ingredients are not much to admire. If you look the first ingredient is a "meal" you would naturally want a chicken meat rather than a substitute. If you are looking for a no by product/no corn or grain Royal Canin isnt the way to go. If you are adding things to the food that is why your puppy loves it so much! I am a full supporter of premium foods. and until I did some research I was feeding Royal Canin because it was a specific breed dog food but just because it says made for Yorkshire Terriers doesnt mean they are using quality ingredients.

Meat vs. Meal ....on Pet Food labeling What does the real difference mean to your pets and you? Meat (Chicken & Lamb are 70% water and only 15% protein) Pet food labels found in grocery and mass marketers like to use Chicken or Lamb to represent real meat. – (Contains 70% moisture). This leads you the consumer to believe that their product is meat based. Chicken or lamb meats are heavier than grains prior to cooking. The moisture contained in the meats (70%) is reduced by 2/3rds after the cooking process, leaving the total formula as a grain base food after processing. VS. Meal (Chicken Meal and Lamb Meal are dry and 50% to 65% protein) meat protein! Canidae Pet foods list Chicken Meal & Turkey meal as the first ingredients. Chicken, Turkey and Lamb meals are dry and are less than 10% moisture and contain 50% - 65% meat proteins. In processing the meat meals do not shrink below the grain weight, producing a true meat based formula for your carnivores. AAFCO label rules require that, the heaviest to the lightest ingredients be the order on the guaranteed analysis panel, (with or without water content) http://www.canidae.com/meat.vs.meal/meat.vs.meal.html Some more support: Chicken Meal vs. Chicken Labeling laws require pet food manufacturers to list ingredients in descending order of weight prior to cooking or processing. The principle component of chicken meat is water. By weight, a chicken is 70 - 75% water. So the truth is, when you see "chicken" on the top of an ingredient list, it means the water weight in the raw (wet) chicken is what qualified it to be listed first. After the cooking process, where up to 75% of the chicken evaporates, the actual chicken content is reduced to being the fourth or fifth ingredient in your pet’s food. So, for every five pounds of raw (wet) chicken used in some brands of pet food, as little as one pound may end up in the finished product. This occurs because 75% of a raw (wet) chicken is water, which evaporates during cooking process. But not with the chicken MEAL in Flint River Ranch health food for pets. Our chicken meal is fresh, human quality chicken meat with the water and fat removed. It takes 5 lbs. of fresh chicken meat to make 1 lb. of chicken meal! So when chicken meal is listed as the first ingredient, it really is in the bag where it counts as a superior protein source for your pet. Your pet needs meat protein to thrive. Meat is good. MEAL IS BETTER! Flint River Ranch puts chicken meal first so that you can offer your pet the maximum level of nutrition in every bowl. http://www.woofsports.com/feedingpet.htm Last edited by Brady's Mom; 03-10-2005 at 05:37 AM.

I'm new here and just got a male yorkie earlier this week. His breeder had him on Nutro puppy food and that's what I bought. Would anyone recommend I change to something else? I live in a pretty small town with a Petco and 1 feed shop, so I'm not sure how much variety in dog food I can find.

To avoid troubles , you should stay with nutro . If you change too fast , the puppy can have upset stomach . Follow the instructions of your breeder

I'm not thinking about just changing his diet all at once. I'd be introducing the new food mixed with the old food, the way you're supposed to switch foods. I'm just wondering if there's anything better for small yorkies than Nutro.

| I always recommend and feed Royal Canin puppy (at petco) then after one year old Royal Canin Yorkshire Terrier food...if you decide to change the food mix it for the first couple days 1/2 and 1/2 then 3/4 royal 1/4 other then after one week about you can use only Royal... some will say Royal puts too much weight I always say "the more the better" good luck
