Fixed or bred? Today I had many mixed emotions... Today I saw my cute little innocent Gizmo... I'm just gonna flat out say it... he humped one of his toys. Is that a sign he's matured enough to get fixed or to be bred? I've been told to wait until 6 months. Now I'm not completely sure what I want to do. He's full bred, up to date with his shots, and I have all the papers on him. Should I breed him? He's 4 months. I think this a big decision to make for him and I'm not sure what to think

4 months old is too young to have him neutered. He needs to be at least 6 months old. But please, have him neutered.

I waited until around 7 months to have both dogs spayed/neutered so they could pull out their baby teeth at the same time. From a health standpoint it's healthier for them to be fixed. Why were you thinking about breeding him? If your not sure, I'd stay safe and get him neutered when he's old enough. It is a healthy decision, and not being neutered is one of the biggest causes for male dogs running away and getting hit by a car because they smell a female in heat. Good luck with your decision!

Hi. I don't think I have welcomed you to YT so, Welcome to YT. I suggest you have your guy neutered. I went through the same thing, wanting to let my girl have puppies. However, I started a little research and realized all the work that should be done prior to even considering breeding a dog, males AND females. There are blood tests, checking hips and knees, looking at lines of both dogs to be bred, full health check ups on my dog as well as past generations of her, and lots more I am sure I am forgetting. Believe me, it took me all of five minutes to decide it was not for me. I am *VERY* thankful I decided against it not just b/c of ALL the work and expense that comes with breeding but my girl developed a genetic disorder that did not show up until she was almost 2 years old.

Humping is not always a sexual act but mostly a pack related dominance behaviour... that's why often females hump each other too...

| This is just how I think and my experience . The humping thing: I have 2 boys over 2yrs old not fixed yet and 1 4yr old boy fix and they do not hump. When they were puppies they would try to hump my female (she's fixed and never was bred) she snapped at them if I didn't stop it myself. I always stopped them and would distracted them by playing, talking to them, or say loud "Who wants a treat", whatever to get them to focus on something else. The 4 yr old one got fixed at 9 months and was already 5 pounds and marking everything and since he was a pup he was the alpha dog, he is now 6+ pounds. and when looking for a male yorkie I was very specific about the size had to be over 6 pounds. The 2 little ones were given to me and were on the small side for my liking in a male yorkie, so for that reason I waited on fixing them. I wanted them to reach their full size, change of coat, strength in their bones, in other words complete the change from puppy to adult. I feel the same about females too. Even tho I waited they are still small....lol but healthy. In fact one of them as a puppy his knees would always cracked a lil too much and it worried me. I put him on vitamins and now there is no bones cracking. Now I feel my boys are ready to get fixed, and I'm less scare of them going under and I hope their recovery will be easier on them. If there is no rush or health problem I will never get any of my dogs fixed under the age of 1 ever again. This is just how I see it, but this is a very personal decision of each pet owner and I fully respect them as I would like them to respect my decision. Best of Luck to you on this and Thank You for asking and keep asking questions when your not sure of anything there are a lot of people here full of good information.

My Bullet is 4 months old and humps my 17 month female Rio whenever they are playing. My vet told me he's not old enough to be sexually mature, so it's probably a dominance/play behavior. It also helps their testicles descend if they already haven't. Rio is spayed and I never had any intention of breeding her, as she's only 3 lbs. What's funny is Bullet also tries to hump my husband's arm whenever they play, but he has NEVER tried to do it to me. Maybe he accepts that mommy is the dominant pack leader! Now if only DH would accept it too! LOL! Bullet is only 2 lbs, so he will be a tiny as well. I plan to have Bullet neutered at 6 months, maybe a little bit later if all of his adult teeth haven't come in yet. But there's no question about it, he WILL be neutered. Breeding takes a lot of knowledge and responsibility, and it's not to be taken lightly.

Humping at 4 months is not a sexual thing it's a dominance thing. Just correct the behavior as you would any other unwanted behavior. If you let a male dog reach puberty (around 7 months) before being neutered, he will start to mark. This is something you definitely do not want. I would get him neutered around 6 months. Many males nutered at that age never lift their leg, they continue to squat.

I waited til my guy was 7 months old so his neutering and any baby teeth left can be pulled at the same time. He never marked in the house and lifts his leg outside to do his potty. Maybe I am just fortunate.
