| Tums as source of calcium for ears during teething I took Betty Boop to a new groomer this morning and we started talking about everything. This lady has a champion show yorkie. I told her how the Boopster's right ear doesn't always stand erect. She told me that since she is only 10 months old that she is still teething and that ears are prone to droop because the calcium used for teething can deprive the cartilage the calcium it needs. After saying all of this......Is Tums a good source of calcium and does it harm the dog in anyway. She told me to give 1/4 of a tablet each day for a few months. Thanks!

| I don't know about the tums but I give Sophie a spoon of plain yogurt once in awhile for the calcium in it and gently massage her ears, she loves it!

| I'd check with your vet, have him advice on the correct dosage of a calcium supplement. One that absorbs quickly into the system. Calcium requires the correct dosage of vitamin D to work properly.

| Tums are an antacid and will decrease the acid in the stomach, causing poor digestion. Also, this form of calcium (inorganic) can lead to problems such as kidney stones. Try researching calcium in a food form. Your local health food store can help you. Daisy's ears were flopped over with creases. The groomer said it looked like the cartilage was broken down and that they may never go up. I massaged her ears gently each day to increase circulation and gave her liquid herbal calcium (for kids). On ear went up and I taped the other one for a couple days until it came up, too! The best you can do is to provide the nutrition and see what happens. The body will decide where it is most needed. | Thanks for the input regarding calcium supplementation. It sure makes a lot of sense to not use Tums because it can disturb digestion. I'll call the vet and see what he says. The kids herbal liquid sounds like it might be worth a try.

| By the time they are 3 to 4 months and the ears still aren't standing then you can tape them. There are a couple different ways to do this. Just google ear taping.
