Ellie is masked down instead of something else for induction b/c she is liver compromised. If we didn't go this way, the vet would most likely use propofol. But the whole masking down thing is very controversial now and a lot of vets don't agree with it (particularly for healthy dogs).

I know when they masked dogs down where I worked there were issues as there is an excitability phase that the dog goes through before they go under, and they can harm themselves when squirming to get up or may bite during that phase. Then, once they are down, you need a very experienced Vet or Anesthesia Tech to intubate as they can wake back up very rapidly, so it must be done very quickly. There are others breeds that require masking only (or do better with it) I think it was the brachycephalic group for one and maybe greyhounds, I think they are sensitive also when it comes to having problems w/anesthesia. I think over all there are definitely problems with anesthesia no matter which method is used, and the pros and cons have to be evaluated for each individual and situation.
