Retained baby teeth, to remove or not?, I need some advice, very worried It's nearly 4am and I can't sleep. I'm worried, Bailey has 2 sets of upper canines and a loose tooth in back of his mouth that doesn't want to come all the way out. I'm am scared to death to get him put under anesthesia again, and especially afraid with the tube going down his throat because of the possibility of collapsed trachea. He is tiny too, 1.69kg. I would probably not be so anxious if the vet service in my area didn't suck so bad, I have so little confidence in them, but they are the only vet around ( for people living in larger areas this maybe hard to comprehend ) Any advice on what I should do? I called the vet and she wasn't in so the receptionist said I would get a call by Tuesday. I'm blown away by the cost too, over 300$ just for anesthesia and 25$ per tooth. I need pet insurance! Either way, if it needs to be done I will have to get it done, I'm just a wreck thinking about something terrible happening to Bailey. |
If his teeth are left in, he will more than likely get very sick from infection and dental disease that will eventually set in. May I suggest vacationing in a larger city, one preferably with a board certified dentist and have his teeth done then. Or is a relative in a city with a good dentist that could take him for a few days or a week, or go visit them? |

Maybe visit another YT member? Someone once posted that giving them chew toys and playing tug o war helps get them to come out. How old is he now? |

I know how you feel. My Tucker still had 4 baby teeth at 7 mths that were crowding his permanent teeth. After doing a bunch of research, I decided to have them taken out when he was neutered. He was neutered at 8 mths and they removed 9 baby teeth and neutered and kept him 2 days because he was groggy from the anesthetic and the whole thing cost me under $300. I was so worried about him going under. He came out of it like a trooper but his bite is permanently distorted due to those baby teeth. His Bottom canines don't grow straight up, they sort of are at an angle like a wart hog but not to that extent, you can't see them unless he is catching a ball or something. He is not a show dog so that's ok, but I wish I had known this could happen and I would have acted sooner. |

I understand how worried you are - I would be, too. The baby teeth do need to come out at some point. I'm just wondering if he had problems before, and if it's possible you might get a different doctor that you like better. Do you have any confidence in the current doctor? |

Try getting him to play tug of war with you and give him lots of chew toys. Armani had to have a number of retained teeth pulled... Chloe had ZERO and I am positive it was because she played tug of war with Armani so much when she was a puppy. |
we had Sadie's out with her spay. which i know doesn't help when you have to do it serperate, but i wanted to say that hers went just fine, it cost $60 per tooth at banfield and even though her spay/anesthesia was covered in our plan, the cost still climbed to over 300...but those canines would have never fallen out on their own. they were super deep rooted and i noticed she was closing her mouth wrong and the teeth her knocking into each other making it hard to chew and digest foods. it will go fine! a vet is still schooled as a vet and if they aren't the best you can get, they are at least trained and have taken all the classes they need...several years of vet medical school. i think you would be just fine to trust them for something as simple as a tooth extraction and as for tubing. mention your concerns so they can explain to you the whole procedure in detail and ease your mind more. good luck and let us know. |
Please try not to worry too much, I know its hard ,but if he did well with the first surgery he will probably do well this time. My Sofia had her spay and then a month later had 7 teeth removed. They did it separate because they said she was too small. She weighed 2.5Lbs. She did great, Im sure yours will too. I know it's hard to put your baby in someone else's hands, but you really have know choice, you have to do whatever your baby needs. These retained teeth can cause a lot of problems for your little one. Think good thoughts.:):) |

I do agree with your last statement. I realize not all vets are the best, and it sucks when you don't have an array of options around you, but they did go to vet school which takes a lot of time and money so obviously it's something they know how to do. I agree about mentioning your concerns. I did so at the clinic Jackson went to because I was sooo nervous. I would have been nervous anywhere with him going under but since it was a clinic, I was definitely nervous and I expressed my worries and concerns and because of that, I think they took EXTRA care of him! |

Another thought - do you brush his teeth regularly? If so, maybe it would be ok to wait until his first cleaning and have these teeth pulled then...that would save one time under anesthesia. I\'m sorry, I\'m just talking off the top of my head. Usually, I recommend getting the retained teeth pulled as early as possible but if his are in good shape I\'d really think about waiting for that first cleaning. |
Thanks for the reassurances everyone, I\'ve played tug of war with him, he chews bully\'s all the time, and they are not moving, the 2 upper canines are solid. The one in the back is turning brown and I\'m afraid of infection. Bonny I do brush is teeth every second day, but there is one tooth that looks like it is not in good shape right in the back, the vet said it sounded like a dead tooth, It\'s been loose for awhile, but not loose enough to fall out! :( |
