| Where is the best place to take blood? I have a question. Yesterday we went to have the Parvo and Distemper titer done. I was really shocked when I saw where they were taking his blood. Where is the best place to take blood? I woke up in the middle of the night upset when I thought about it. I'm not sure if it matters but he stays really calm on the doctor's table. Knock on wood. Thanks for your opinions.

| I don't know if it's the best place to take blood from but I remember my vet taking it from Boog's neck several times. They also did this with Murfee for his pre-neuter bloodwork. |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | I know of them only drawing blood through the neck. And, it's not without possible complications. Ruby almost died from an abscess created by having a blood draw.

| If they can't find a really good vein in the front leg, they will take it from the neck.

| Now this is what I thought they would do too. They didn't even attempt his leg. It was horrifying to watch them take it from his neck. I'm still shaking thinking about it. Maybe I am over reacting but I can't help how I feel.

| OMG. Poor Ruby! I am just terrified by how fragile they are. I don't want to make you live through it again but how did you know about the absess in your little Ruby?

| Jugular is most common in small dogs. The leg veins collapse so easily. There can be complications, but it is relatively safe. I've seen it done quite a bit and they don't seem to mind it either. I wasn't happy when I first found out either, but it's just one of those things...

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Wylie has had it drawn from the leg before, but usually the jugular. For Marcel, it's always been the jugular bc he's pretty small. I'd always rather have them draw from a nice, clearly visible jugular - than hunt around for a small "roller" in the leg.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | She got a little bump at the site of the needle entry, that continued to grow for several days, it became very obvious what it was. She came through it just fine though, and I wouldn't hesitate to have another draw done if necessary. But, I would caution my vet about her last experience - I think she probably jerked and the vet didn't expect it coming from such a tiny one.

| Thank you all for making me feel better. I had only seen it in his leg before. I appreciate all your feedback.
