Where is the best place to take blood? I have a question. Yesterday we went to have the Parvo and Distemper titer done. I was really shocked when I saw where they were taking his blood. Where is the best place to take blood? I woke up in the middle of the night upset when I thought about it. I'm not sure if it matters but he stays really calm on the doctor's table. Knock on wood. Thanks for your opinions. |
I don't know if it's the best place to take blood from but I remember my vet taking it from Boog's neck several times. They also did this with Murfee for his pre-neuter bloodwork. |
I know of them only drawing blood through the neck. And, it's not without possible complications. Ruby almost died from an abscess created by having a blood draw. |
If they can't find a really good vein in the front leg, they will take it from the neck. |

Jugular is most common in small dogs. The leg veins collapse so easily. There can be complications, but it is relatively safe. I've seen it done quite a bit and they don't seem to mind it either. I wasn't happy when I first found out either, but it's just one of those things... |

Wylie has had it drawn from the leg before, but usually the jugular. For Marcel, it's always been the jugular bc he's pretty small. I'd always rather have them draw from a nice, clearly visible jugular - than hunt around for a small "roller" in the leg. |

Thank you all for making me feel better. I had only seen it in his leg before. I appreciate all your feedback. |
Sugar has done 2 blood test before, always front leg although she's small... |
