| 14 week old puppy not gaining weight? Hi, I have a 14 week old Biewer boy named Hepburn and he is 2lb 4oz. My worry is that he has been 2lb 4oz for 3 weeks, since I got him. I weigh him on our kitchen scale, zeroed out with a deep bowl on it he can sit in. I am concerned that he is supposed to be gaining weight now, as he is a growing puppy. He eats well, usually close to or all the amount labeled on the bag of food for his end weight. The bag says for a 3 month old puppy that will weigh between 3-4kg (I am in germany, so the bags are in kilos instead of pounds) I should be giving him 7/8 a cup or 90g a day. I am giving him 30g in the morning, 30g at midday and 30g about 3 hours before bedtime. The food stays down until he finishes it. Sometimes he eats each 30g when I give them, sometimes he eats 90g at night and has no breakfast or lunch. When he does this, I try to hand feed him as I am worried about his sugar level. Is this lack of weight gain something I should be concerned about? If so, what other things should I be looking for and what should I be telling my vet when I go in? He has an appointment in 10 days for his 16 week shots, should I wait to see if he gains before then or take him in tomorrow to have him checked out? Oh, I forgot to mention, he is eating royal canin mini junior food, and he gets just a pinch of shredded carrots on it in the evening. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. |

| He is tiny and the tiny ones don't gain as much weight as the med to larger yorkies. He may just be maintaining his weight and then gonna have a growth spurt. There are however also health reasons like liver shunt that can cause a pup not to gain so I think the pup should be seen by a vet to get an expert opinion on it

Yorkie Talker | Angel weighed 1 pound when she was 6 months old, and with in two weeks she weighed 2 pounds, she weighs around 2.3 now and she will be 2 in May, i think they all grow at different stages, as long as your puppy is eating good, i would think that your puppy is good, have you wormed your puppy? |

| Worming No, I haven't wormed him since I got him, my breeder gave me the stuff to do so, but said every two months would be often enough and he just was wormed on the 26th of last month. Should I be doing this more often than my breeder said? I have this syringe thing with pink cream in it and directions on how much to give him per kg. I think I will wait until his appointment in 10 days and ask my vet what she thinks about the weight. He has to have blood work done the beginning of April (I am taking him to the states in august and in order to bring him back to germany he needs to have his blood tested for antibodies to prove that the rabies vaccine was indeed effective) and I am thinking that if he is still having issues then, I will ask her to test for anything else that might be causing his lack of weight gain at that point, unless of course she thinks that it is more urgent when I am in for his 16 week shots. Thank you both for the responses. It's so nice to know that when I have questions I can come on here and always get at least one or two opinions, if not more! |

| Try smushing wet food with his dry food. I do it twice a day and just leave dry food out incase they get hungry. But mine are older. I believe a small pup should have a few meals a day, vet told me 4 when mine were that young. If your constanly giving him treats that may be a cause. I feel bad just giving them dry food so nasty.
