| ![]() I haven't take my male Yorkie to the vet for almost a year now. Can someone tell me if its time for his next shots or should I wait? My male Yorkie is about 1.5 years old right now. He has already got the following shots: Distemper-Hepatits Canine Parvovirus Parainfluenza Rabies Leptospirosis Lyme Canine Periosontits Vaccine And when he was 8 months old I started giving him heartworm medicine (Iverhart Max). I'm still giving him this medicine once a month. He's in good health now, but I wanted to make sure stays that way. So if anyone can advise me if there's anything else I should do or not, I would really appreciate it. Thank You |

| ![]() Hi, It is best to take your pup to the Vet 2 times a year for checkups one for yearly shots (speak with your Vet which ones they recommended, not all Vets recommend all shots you listed) But some are yearly and a must for the health of your pup. A six month wellness is recommended just to make sure your pup is doing well. Good Luck |

| ![]() They usually need booster shots for the first couple of years, at least. Some of the vaccines you listed are controversial and should only be given if you live in high risk areas of the country (I know there are other members here who'll know much more on that than I do). You might also want to think about having bloodwork annually - this will give you a good normal baseline reference in case he's ever ill, and it helps to identify potential problems early. Do you remember the vet you took him to? They should have all of his info and the due dates for his next visit on file - I would call them and see what they recommend.

I like to do blood work, fecal and urine once a year so if anything is wrong they can catch it early on. When i do blood work i have titers done for parvo distemper to avoid having to over vaccinate. | |

| ![]() Unfortunately, your boy has been overvaccinated. It is generally agreed upon that rabies, parvo, distemper,a nd hepatitis should be given to all healthy dogs. I schedule varies from vet to vet and owner to owner, but after puppy shots and one year booster, they should not be done yearly. The non-core vaccines are just that, non core for most dogs. Generally in a sensitive breed like Yorkies, their risk outweighs their benefit. I would think long and hard while doing lots of research before giving these. Blood work should be done 1-2 times a year when dogs hit about age 6. However, it is a good idea to start now. A urinalysis could also be added. Fecals should be done at least once yearly, but preferrably twice, for all dogs. Some vets require heartworm testing before writing a new prescription. Then neutering should be considered if it hasn't already been done and teeth should be given attention during the exam. In a couple years especially, it may be time to start dentals unless you do home care.
