| Worried about getting my baby neutered! What do I need to know?? Hi everyone! So...my Rafa needs to get neutered in the next two weeks and I’m realllyyyyyy nervous about it. Is there anything I need to know before he gets neutered? I'm more worried about finding the right vet...I love the vet I go to, but I'm not sure if he "specializes" in small dogs. Should I look for a vet that specializes in small dogs? My vet said the procedure is very simple and almost laughed when I told him I was soo worried.... I've just read too many articles and have seen posts on here how their Yorkies died during surgery- such as too much anesthesia and so on..... I’m just a paranoid mama needing some encouragement. Thanks!

Donating YT 10K Club Member | I highly suggest having a full blood panel done as opposed to a regular cbc. This is not a blood test whose results would be available the morning of surgery...so plan to do have it done the week before My two neutered boys came home and acted like they'd had nothing done earlier in the day. The waiting is the worse...I'm sure your baby wil be fine.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Hi, I know how you feel, I believe in neutering and think it helps contribute to a healthier happier dog, but it's still scary. My vet does specialize in small dogs, and I didn't have to tell him anything that he didn't already know. For example small breeds need to use a special kind of anesthesia, and he already knew that. Another thing, was he was the one who mentioned pulling the baby teeth at the same time. The Yorkie breed has a tough time losing their baby teeth on their own, and some will get a double row of teeth, which can lead to complications later. My vet knew that Joey's milk teeth should be pulled at the same time; otherwise, you have to put them under again in a few months, and its much costlier due to the anesthesia. Another thing we did at the same time is get a microchip. It's only $30.00 for a lifetime fee, and I feel a little safer doing this. I also believe that getting it done at the time of neutering is safer because the dog is less likely to flinch, which can cause complications. Best of luck in finding a vet, you don't need one that specializes in small animals, but you need one who's willing to listen to you, and your concerns. Maybe you can help train him into becoming a specialist in yorkies!
