Default Has anyone ever done PTS?

My vet and I believe that Toto's quality of life is diminishing. Remember, I got him in 08 at a shelter and he was already blind and deaf at that time.

Has anyone ever done it and how did it go?

I cannot give you any advice but I am sending a hug to you and Toto. I'm so sorry you have to go through this. You are such a special person to have rescued him and gave him a loving home. We will pray for you.

Our thoughts go out to you as you face this most difficult decision. There are so many factors , emotions, feelings that go into that decision.

Your heart will know when it is time. You could google on that question I'm sure you will find many resources to help you sort through your options.

Heart feelings and minds are not often in sync initially. I have faced the decision on whether or not to take a parent off life support. I found my heart needed to hold on to grieve and feel, my brain was busy making rational decisions for or against. When I sat quietly with my Dad, holding his hand, watching him, and just well i guess remembering, looking into his eyes, there was a point in time, when everything in my body eased, and I just knew that now was time to let go.

We were faced with this for our 2 cats who were sisters. One was 12 at the time, the other 13. It was the hardest decision that I had to make but I felt that it was what I had to do. For me it was a decision based on the life that my baby was faced with, not about what I wanted. Only you can make this determination. I wish you the best in what you decide. Hugs to you.

My dad is fighting cancer, and heart and lung disease, so unless his current wife is going to make that decision alone, I might have to do that one too. But in some respects when a human being is on life support you are *helping* them die, their body is struggling to let go. With a listless puppy who's health problems are making him unhappy, it's a bit different. I'm so sorry that you had to deal with that for your parent. I'd much rather have to make that decision for a pet than a parent!

I had to make that decision with my last dog. I held on to her for longer than i probably should have done, because i couldnt bear to let her go. In the end i had to sit and think about her quality of life and what pleasures she still had. She was mentally troubled with doggy alzheimers and physically very poorly too. She had no pleasure left...couldnt stand to eat without my help, didnt really know me, was incontinent and she walked in circles until she was exhausted and fell over. When i thought about it, i knew it was time to let her go.
Once the decision was made, it all happened very quickly. It broke my heart, but i knew it was the best for her. If your vet will come to your house, i would have him do that.
I had Willow cremated and have her ashes on the shelf in my living room, so i still feel i am taking care of her.
My thoughts and prayers are with you, as i know it is a very difficult time.
You need to think what is kindest for your little dog now.

I am sorry that you are having to make this decision. Its something I never want to have to do. I once read on here someone asking the question, when do you really know when its time to say goodbye? Another person responded, when they don't wag their tail anymore.

I'm so sorry your Toto is at this point where you are having to consider this. I know it must be a heartbreaking decision but feel you will know when it is time.

In Sept. 08 we had to have our blue heeler, Patch pts. She was 14 years old, our family dog that helped raise our sons. She had been blind and near deaf for the previous couple of years. Patch managed very well around here until about two weeks before and she had lost her appetite. That morning it was obvious to us and our vet agreed.

I hugged her until well past her very last breath, telling her how much she was loved and would be missed, but that we would see her again. She is now, here on our place in my special flower garden at the base of a yorkie tree carving my dh has done.

It broke my heart but I knew it was best and to keep her any longer would be selfish on my part.

I am so sorry you are facing this most difficult and sad decision. Just a year ago I had to put my Pom down at the age of 12 after several years of failing health and the year before I had to put Dixie my 7 month old yorkie to sleep after she was found to have congenital kidney failure. With both when the time came there really wasn't any decision to make as they were both very sick and no hope of improving. It is so difficult and I always stay with my babies and hold them when the time comes as I want them to go peacefully in my arms. You will know when the time is right. Hugs

When I had to have my last dog PTS I had taken her into the vet to see if there was anything else we could do. My vet is awesome and told me it was time. This took the decision making off of me. I insisted on holding her through then entire process and for awhile afterwards. It was all I could do to hand her over to them. Your vet should be able to advise you if Toto is in pain and when the time is right. Sorry you have to make such an emotional decision.

Very true... I had to let my Milkyway go this past winter, and it is one of the hardest things to do. When they are are going to die a painful death, or are dying slowly in pain, you have to think about them and not about what it will do to you. It is not easy, but doing the right thing never is.
