| Is Robitussin DM good? Coughing like something in it's throat Hi, 2 weeks ago I got a male yorkie, and he now is 17 weeks old (weighs 3 lbs) and lately has been coughing alot, like something is caught in his throat, nothing comes up though. He play and acts normal otherwise and is eating well. I have read on the web that one can use ROBITUSSIN DM, but I don't know how much to give. Any advice? I wanted to try this first before taking him to the vet. Please help. Thanks. Dewey's Dad.

| I never heard that was OK. I would go to the vet, If he's coughing alot, he needs to be seen. I would rather be safe, than sorry. Good Luck, Please keep us posted.

| I agree... just thought i would try the robitussin first....my other dog never had this problem... I think I may just take him to the vet and if something is wrong with him, i'm calling the breeder and have her come pick him up and give me my money back, in full, plus pay for the medical expenses because she gave me a written genetic health guarantee. If she resists, then i'm taking her to court.

| Sorry to hear the little guy is coughing. My new rescue Maltese is, too. Vet said its Kennel cough. She prescribed childrens Robitussin DM (or generic DM)-1/2 teaspoon (2.5 cc) every 6-8 hours for Tyler who is one year old and weighs just over five pounds. *Do NOT use anything with acetaminifin (sp?) as it is not good for dogs.* I hope Dewey gets better soon. | I thought it was kennel cough but i only have him for 2 weeks..... and he's sick already? I dont want a sick puppy !!!! you know? Too early for all that. I'm very disappointed and it's so much added expenses which I was not prepared for at this time....

| Ok will take him vet tomorrow as today is a holiday. I gave him 1/4 tsp of Robitussin DM (has no acetaminophen). If it's only Kennel cough, do you think I should still keep him, or send him back to the breeder and get my refund? Thanks.

| It probably isn't much of anything. Have you had him very long? I have heard some dogs get a little cough for a while after they have certain shots. He could also have just a little cold. I don't think I would be so quick to just assume that something is wrong with him enough that you want to get down on the breeder. I would NEVER give something like Robotussin to a puppy. These dogs are fragile when they are little like this and ANY medication that isn't prescribed by a vet could cause overdose and or brain damage. |

| I understand that you might be a bit nervous about his health due to his cough. But if it is just kennel cough, I don't think thats so horrible (IMO). A trip to the vet and a possible prescription of antibiotics shouldn't be expensive. After two weeks I would have bonded with him and he with me. How do YOU feel about returning him? |

| Thanks for your reply. Here is a link that states that it is safe to use Robitussin, for dogs, however without the acetaminophen (tylenol). 1/2 tsp for small dogs. http://experts.about.com/q/700/3625681.htm I'll keep my eye on him and take him to the vet tomorrow if he is continuing to cough.

| Moniquew, Well I have him now for 2 weeks now, but the day I got him, he coughed up a large amount of debris, looked like hairballs (fibres) with little pieces of wood chips, paint, etc.. I was so grossed out.. I was like, how can a good breeder have their pups eating crap like this.... It really turned me off but I gave the puppy a chance, he's cute and loving.... Now that it's only been 2 weeks, and he's got this bad cough, i am wondering if he is not healthy. I took him to the vet and he gave the shots and said the pup was well. I didn't mention about the "debris episode" though. I had forgot. But that night of the shots, he had a very runny nose... then the coughing got real bad. Maybe it's a reaction to that... I will see how he is tomorrow.... I gave him 2 doses already of the robitussin DM, and he isnt coughing as much, just once in a while, so maybe it's working. If he is bad tonight, and early tomorrow, then i'll take him to the vet in the morning, just to be safe. This link says that cough medicines are good: http://puppies-dogs-supplies.com/0463-kennel-cough.html Thanks for your input and i'll keep you all posted.

| toby had kennel cough when he was a puppy, and my vet opted a "non agressive approach" because it wassnt a bad case....... i just used the robitussin DM, if it is kennel cough it will take a while to go away compeltely, i have heard of it lasting MONTHS (toby's i think lasted a month or two) but i have heard of it lasting up to 6 |

| Thanks for your post. It's sad though having to hear your puppy cough so much. He did good all day yesterday, didnt cough much but he woke me up at 5 am this morning, coughing and sounds like he has phlegm (like you hear when babies are congested), I sure hope its not pneumonia... gonna take him to the vet today. Poor puppy :-( I'm also concerned about my other dog, she's a year now but she had the anti kennel cough spray up her nostrils when she was a puppy, so far so good because I know it's contagious. Will keep you posted.
