| Recovery time after spay? Kimchee was spayed yesterday at a spay and neuter clinic. The vet told us to keep the e-collar on her for 7 - 10 days. Sounds a bit excessive to me. And the e-collar sucks! The only good thing about it is she can't eat stuff off the floor Anyway, how long does it usually take for the pups to get back to normal behavior? Would it be wise to take the e-collar off sooner? She's been sleeping all day but she eats and drinks normally. Also goes potty normally. I hate to see her all depressed! |

| Oh gosh, no expert here however, my impression was that the collar is only needed IF they are trying to mess with the incision as they could break loose stitches and require more attention. When I left Zoey to be spayed I also left her softee collar and they did not use it. They said she had not messed with it at all and I only needed to use it if she did. She did try the next couple of days and thus the collar was a blessing. After that - she left it entirely alone and she was done with the collar. I am sure more experienced people will be here soon - but my novice experience says to keep an eye on her and if she is leaving it alone then she doesn't need to wear it and vice versa. The harder thing for us was trying to keep Zoey from playing, running or jumping too much! Good luck and I hope your little one is back to her normal self soon

| When Maggie was spayed, she was kinda out of it for a couple of days. I hadn't come up with my Softee Collar then so I put a onezie on her. Well it helped until she peed right thru it! lol The other thing you will need to do is watch and make sure that it doesn't irritate the incision site. Anyhow, like YorkieMom6 said, you really only need to have it on if she's messing with the incision site. That's what is nice about my Softee collars...you can leave it on without it be a hinderance or nuisance for your poor baby. Good luck and I hope your little recoverys quickly.

| I can not understand why he would want an e-collar for such a long time?...I've heard of them, but would think that you would see if the dog was even interested in bothering w/the stitches, before using one...I'd, definitely, use the onesie, before I'd use an ecollar......I didn't use the collar or a onesie, and was fortunate that Apple didn't bother w/her stitches... |

| I never used an ecollar or a onsie, Laci didnt mess with her stitches or even lick them, she was fine after 2 days... I do really think its excessive.. and if she is licking It I would imagine that a onsie would be far more comfortable then a e collar.

| I agree with all of the others. You really do not need an e-collar unless she is bothering the incision. I have never had a pup do that and I have had many in my home that were spayed. Of course there is always the exception. If you are home enough to observe her, I would say leave that thing off.

| Thanks for the replies. I don't trust Kimchee to not lick her incision! She's a naughty girl The onesie sounds like a great idea. I will give that a try. She can't even fit in her kennel with the e-collar! It's driving her crazy. She's more active today and wants to play. It's hard to tell her no! It's gonna be a long week |

| Glad to hear that she is doing better today. It is such a shame that you got stuck with one of those plastic cone e-collars. They are so archaic.

| I just got Chloe spayed 2 weeks ago. She stayed overnight and when I picked her up the next day she acted like she had been to a sleep over. Tail was wagging and she was ready to go home. fortunately she didn't bother her stitches so I didn't have to use a collar on her. |

| I took the e-collar off and put Kimchee in a baby onesie. Now my problem is she's hyper as hell! |

| I got my lil girl spayed at a Natural / homeopathic Vet's office and he didn't recommend a collar or onesie. He stitched her so the stitches are internal - really clean. She barely licks it. I know this thread is old, but in case someone googles "yorkie and spay" perhaps this post can help them. The doctor said not to clean the site unless it's oozing and to only use Witch Hazel. He said it's perfectly ok for them to lick it occasionally and that collars and onesies are unnecessary. He recommended a baby aspirin for pain or 1/4 of an adult aspirin, which is what I've been giving her. She is recovering well. The doc let me watch the surgery. It was fascinating. The surprising part was that there was hardly any blood at all. It's hard to watch her struggle with stairs (I lift her) and she's very low on energy for now, but I suspect she'll be back to her playful self in a day or two. |
