Oh gosh, no expert here however, my impression was that the collar is only needed IF they are trying to mess with the incision as they could break loose stitches and require more attention. When I left Zoey to be spayed I also left her softee collar and they did not use it. They said she had not messed with it at all and I only needed to use it if she did. She did try the next couple of days and thus the collar was a blessing. After that - she left it entirely alone and she was done with the collar.
I am sure more experienced people will be here soon - but my novice experience says to keep an eye on her and if she is leaving it alone then she doesn't need to wear it and vice versa. The harder thing for us was trying to keep Zoey from playing, running or jumping too much!
