| Advice for brushing teeth Does anyone have any advice on how to brush your dogs teeth. I have such a hard time doing Oscar's. He doesn't really sit well and he wiggles away from me. I have a tooth brush with the little tiny head and I have a finger brush. I have the enzymatic tooth paste. Which brush would work best and how can I do this so it's not so traumatic for Oscar?

| I wish I could help but I have this problem too. Toby REFUSES to let us brush his teeth. He transforms into the Incredible Hulk. It's amazing how strong a 6lb dog can become. I've tried holding his head still while my wife brushes but he squirms and kicks so violently I'm afraid he's going to hurt himself. It's the one thing I worry the most about with him because their dental care is inportant.Luckily he loves the tartar contol treats so at least that's something.

| I use Four Paws Pet Dental toothpaste and I think it's beef flavored- Josephine loves it. While I would love for it to smell like mint, the toothpaste doesn't really smell like anything at all, but its worth it considering Jo-jo thinks every brushing is a treat. Only problem is she'll try to eat the brush xD Other than that I'm not really sure I can help you; with all of my dogs I have always tried to get them used to brushing early on in puppy-hood, rubbing their gums with my finger, putting a little toothpaste on the brush and letting them lick it off, ect. |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | I also use beef flavored Four Paws Pet Dental toothpaste. Missy loves it and will chew on the toothbrush to make sure she gets all of it.

| I've had this problem too, but I think I've outsmarted Bilbo. I put the paste on the brush, stick it in the back of his mouth (between the teeth and gums) and let him chew on it. I rotate the brush so it gets the tops, bottoms and sides. Eventually, he will let me brush a little. |

| I got my guys to brush their teeth very early on. I put scraps of white meat chicken on the toothbrush and trained them with a clicker. After a few times, they wanted the toothbrush. I then switched to toothpaste. Teddy even brushes his own teeth, as seen in his featured film... http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/my-...oothbrush.html

| Both my girls are really good when I brush their teeth. I just took it superrrrrr slow. The first couple of time, I just let them lick the tooth paste off the brush. I didn't actually brush their teeth at all. After that I would just gently put the brush into their mouth (on the sides) and kinda let them chew and play with it. I gradually started to just do a few brush like movements here and there. It didn't take too long for me to get them to enjoy a full on tooth brushing. Missy will even open her mouth up wide for me now. She's so good. You really just have to be very patient and try not to rush it. Getting the outsides of their teeth are most important, so maybe try just slipping the toothbrush into their cheek and brushing the outsides of the molars first.

| No matter what I have tried Bruce has never accepted me brushing his teeth, and I have tried in earnest since he got them...So I am not the one to give advice on this subject, but I find he will usually let me get either uppers or lowers...So I will usually switch off nights. And if he will not deal with that even, as is the case at times I will even try to just wipe them off with a wash cloth, which I know sounds silly...However, Bruce had a malformed bite as a pup and so he had to have some dental work to correct that and as a result we got into the habit of taking him to a veterinary dentist that he now sees once a year for cleanings. The dentist has never reported any significant plaque or tarter and usually remarks how good his oral health is and he is not the best brusher...So I would not worry too much so long as your baby has a good diet and you are getting most of the teeth fairly regularly... Super impressed with all the good brushers out there!!!

| Start with a face cloth Hi, I have the same problem with my Chuck. I start by cleaning his eyes with a face cloth wet with warm water. I talk to him calmly and explain what I'm doing (not that he understands but it's consistant). Then I wring out the cloth and put just a dab of toothpaste on the corners. I wrap that around my index finger and gently start rubbing his canines, up by his gums, the whole time talking calmly. I've been doing this for several months now and now I can get to the top and bottoms. He also lets me floss his front teeth, but I have to be super gentle. Initially, he was really squirmy so I didn't get to do many but I attempted more often. For us, talking calmly and being very gentle is the key. Chuck also gets a treat afterwards. |

that is just too cute. I wish Oscar would be like that, but he'd probably run and hide when he heard the brush
