| Are probiotics/enzymes bad for my yorkie? There good for humans? Iams has it? I got advice from William Cusick that probiotics for my yorkie teddy are no good. He is a former vet and specializes in diet plans and what foods are good for each specific breed. He cautioned that i should not give him any and he should get it from his food??? I am puzzzled because there is so much buzz around probiotics in the new Iams food now they advertize probiotics??? and typically in the dog food making and food making business generally. Am i get false information? i do feed teddy Raw diet and purchased the enzymes and probiotics to go along with this BARF diet?? Please help! |

| Hi, Well he did not give me much reasoning. Since Teddy has a bladder stone he said not to feed him because of the calcium in it? i dont beleive it. Really the only remedy i take when i am sick are probiotics vs antibiotics and i always get better. Also i take them everyday. Put in the good bacteria to kill off the bad Probiotics are good for humans and i believe dogs too, and with Iams now promoting their new product (kibble) with probiotics i dont think it is bad. They are even promoting probiotics in childrens cereals at the grocery store. I will call me vet today and ask and get back to you. Although if anything it helps with digestion and to keep there intestines free from harmful bacterial. Also when i went to the holistic store to purchase the RAW food, there was the probiotics and salmon oil on the fridge door, advising to pair all of these up for proper nutrition reasons. Check out this site... www.humangradepets.com This site has a lot of info on raw too. This is a holistic store in toronto, Ontario. Great store! Hope this answers your question. |

| I also wanted to add that i have given Denta treat which contains such probiotics for the doggies breath control and also the enzymes and probiotics to Teddy and he is fine. If anything i think their stomachs mught get upset, so lower the dose. Although it is good for my little guy! |

| Hi, Just spoke with my vet, Probiotics are great for dogs and dogs with baldder stones. Remember don't take any infor on the web to heart, some people may not even be vets etc. they just are either promoting a book or health plan etc. to make money such as William Cusick. He is very against it, why? i do not know, maybe so that we buy his books etc? eventhough i fell into the trap and bought it. Goodluck and remember probitics are good! |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I don't know anything about William Cusick, but I do know that you are correct when you say, "there is so much buzz around probiotics". When there is a lot of buzz around something I get suspicious. It's possible to overdo even a good thing. Probiotics are essentially good bacteria that are found in a healthy intestine. I haven't really studied the issue, but I do know that a healthy intestine continues to make the good bacteria and keeps things in balance. Now, sometimes after taking an antibiotic and killing off bad bacteria for some infection, we also kill off the good bacteria, and probiotics can introduce these bacteria back into the intestines, but I don't see why this should be done frequently. Once the bacteria are back in place, they grow and flourish and produce more all by themselves, unless something is killing them off. I know many companies are adding it to the food, but I don't know if it's something that every dog really needs, or it just sounds good on the label. I don't know if overdoing probiotics can sometimes cause problems, and that seems to be what Cusick is suggesting, but currently there is little evidence on the effectiveness of probiotics for the healthy intestine. They are studying their effectiveness for a wider variety of diseases; I would like to know why he cautioned you against using them.

Yes. I agree in terms of replenishing after anitbiotics or mediation is taken. But i think the reason why it is being recommened on dogs eating a raw diet is to help with digestion and bacteria, possibly in the raw food. These probiotis also have digestive enzymes. I mean people take digetive enzymes to help break downt here food as well. I know that we are a different species but when comparing it to a raw diet it may be beneficial. Also the holistic store where i purchased the enzyme/probiotics has it on the fridge door of the raw food freezer. you can check out that stores website www.humangradepets.com William Cusick i believe is against it since he beleives it has something to do with calcium and too much of that causes calcium oxalate creates stones in make yorkies typically. i am just quotting what ive researched, although this may no be true. But i did check with my vet and they said it is perfectly fine and good to give. | |
