| I need to switch from NV Instinct to ???? I've been feed NV Instinct for over a year with no problems. All my babies love it and they were all doing well on it. But now, I think I need to change to a new food - I just don't know what. I fed Instinct because Alex has food allergies to chicken and some grains (I never identified which grains because it was easier to just feed grainless than do another elimination diet). A few months ago, another YT member posted that she had to switch from Instinct to another food because the protein level made her new puppy drink & pee way too much. I've noticed in the last couple of months that Tate is drinking a peeing a LOT. His doctor says he's fine and thinks it may be the food. And, I just got a new puppy a couple of weeks ago. He does fine on Canidae which is what his breeder was feeding. But he has really runny stools when I try to feed him Instinct. I don't feed Canidae because most varieties contain chicken and I don't want to feed the fish one due to the ethoxyquin scare. Help!! What is a good food that would work for all my babies?

| So you want grain free, no chicken, low to moderate protein, ethoxyquin free? Any manufacturers or companies you want to stay away from (i.e. Diamond, Menu, etc.)?

I would prefer to stay away form those two, although I have fed TOTW from Diamond and liked it.

| Hi Bonny!! Sorry to hear Instinct is not working out anymore, I know how much you loved feeding it and were very happy with it. So no grains, and no chicken right? I would HIGHLY suggest Acana Grasslands. Grasslands is lamb baked and has fish in it as well without any scary chemicals. Acana sells small bags for a few bucks so you can try it. I hope there is a retailer near you. Acana is grainfree and also comes in Prairie Harvest (chicken based) and also Pacifica (entirely fish based.) Also for soft stool I started to use The Honest Kitchen Perfect Form and I add 1/4 tsp of that on his food in the morning and never a problem again with loose stools.

Therapy Dog Donating Member | Cosmo was drinking and peeing up a storm and at first we thought it was kidney problem but ruled that out since the day we brought him home as a puppy he never peed all night in his sleep cage. Took him to the vet for his initial checkup and nothing wrong so our vet said it was most likely high protein since some dogs can't tolerate it and that makes them drink more water hence more peeing..yikes..and I don't want that. He said to keep in the 23-28% range for protein for Yorkies/Biewers.

Thanks Viv! That's a good one to look in to. Unfortunately no local stores carry Acana or Orijen so I'd have to order it. I did finally get a sample of the original Orijen for my guys to try and they had trouble with the size of the kibble. Is Acana's kibble any smaller? Oh, and I just noticed the protein level (33%) is almost the same as Instinct (35%). Still, I may have to try the two without chicken as I do respect this company.

| Hey bon!! Yes, the Acana pieces are a little big, like small disks. I use a nut cracker and break them up for Snick. Yes, I'm crazy!! Lolll, I don't care, anything for our babies right? Snick LOVES his Acana....last night we skipped his Primal and he ate very well. We might just go back to full rotation with Primal in the morning and Acana at night...right now we have been feeing Primal in Am and Pm and using Acana as a snack/supplement. He eats the Acana SO WELL. Hugs!!! Snick & Viv ps. Maddox is stunningly handsome!! WOW!

The Prairie line was my first thought of what I'd switch to. I just wish I knew which grain(s) Alex is sensitive to. I think it's barley but I've read that's usually a good grain that doesn't cause a lot of reactions, so I just don't know. I've never heard of HK's Perfect Form. I'm going to go take a look at that right now. Thank you!!

| What about Natural Balance Sweet Potato & Venison? Has anyone tried this food? It's grain free and the protein level is only 20% which I think would be ok with me giving bully sticks, occasional raw, etc. I've never fed NB so I don't know how my guys would like it. Grrrr, and I really thought I had this whole food thing resolved.

| I feed Fromm's Surf and Turf and was going to suggest it as the kibble is tiny and my three love it, but I seen where chicken is on the ingredient list. I fed Orijien 6 fish, but had the problem with drinking peeing too much plus loose stools with one of them. How about Wellness core Ocean fish. It is less protien 34% and contains no grain or chicken. It was one of the few that I could come up with that didn't have either. I am not sure of the kibble size though. May want to get samples. Good luck!!!

I tried a sample of Wellness Core Ocean a few months ago. The kibble was huge and none of mine liked it at all. I'm going to check Fromm's out now. Thank you!!

I do beleive NB is made by diamond. (someone correct me if Im wrong). There are a few on this board that feed NB and are happy with them. I hear you on the food, I have gone through so many different brands and finding one that my dogs will eat and continue to do well on has been a never ending battle. I have just started switching them to Acana the prarie one and they seem to like it ok, but I just started yesterday. I too have to cut the peices in half, they are pretty large. Tucker my yorkie mix does ok with them whole but my 4 pound toy poodle not so much. I dont have much to offer advice wise, I just wanted to say good luck, I know how hard it can be.

I was afraid the Acana kibble would be larger. Darn it, with 6 mouths to feed I can't see me cutting up every piece of kibble for them.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Uh boy, Bon...you're driving a hard bargain, ! I was going to suggest Solid Gold Barking at The Moon...I think it might be worth a try...HOWEVER ...it's manufactured at Diamond....but you may want to read its site before discounting it entirely....maybe...I dunno though...you have to do what feels right for your kiddos .
