It's possible to overdo even a good thing. Probiotics are essentially good bacteria that are found in a healthy intestine. I haven't really studied the issue, but I do know that a healthy intestine continues to make the good bacteria and keeps things in balance. Now, sometimes after taking an antibiotic and killing off bad bacteria for some infection, we also kill off the good bacteria, and probiotics can introduce these bacteria back into the intestines, but I don't see why this should be done frequently. Once the bacteria are back in place, they grow and flourish and produce more all by themselves, unless something is killing them off. I know many companies are adding it to the food, but I don't know if it's something that every dog really needs, or it just sounds good on the label. I don't know if overdoing probiotics can sometimes cause problems, and that seems to be what Cusick is suggesting, but currently there is little evidence on the effectiveness of probiotics for the healthy intestine. They are studying their effectiveness for a wider variety of diseases; I would like to know why he cautioned you against using them.

Yes. I agree in terms of replenishing after anitbiotics or mediation is taken. But i think the reason why it is being recommened on dogs eating a raw diet is to help with digestion and bacteria, possibly in the raw food. These probiotis also have digestive enzymes. I mean people take digetive enzymes to help break downt here food as well. I know that we are a different species but when comparing it to a raw diet it may be beneficial. Also the holistic store where i purchased the enzyme/probiotics has it on the fridge door of the raw food freezer. you can check out that stores website www.humangradepets.com

William Cusick i believe is against it since he beleives it has something to do with calcium and too much of that causes calcium oxalate creates stones in make yorkies typically. i am just quotting what ive researched, although this may no be true. But i did check with my vet and they said it is perfectly fine and good to give.
