| Eye goop I am babysitting a coworkers Yorkie until Saturday. She brought her little male over last night. My dogs like him and he is well behaved. My problem is that this little guy's eyes are NASTY. They have huge black gobs that has apparently been building up for a while. Some of it is gooey (ewww) and some is dried into his hair. Is there a way to get this off of him? I've tried washing using a wash cloth and qtips but the baby shampoo isn't cutting it. It also seems uncomfortable for him although he isn't crying. I feel so sorry for him!

Just water will soften the clumps. Lay him on his back on your lap head towards you. Us a cotton ball fairly wet, hold it on the clump and squeeze gently(use a new cotton ball for each eye). Repeat this to wet the clump for a couple of minutes. Once soft, take your finger nails and grip the clump on both sides(this is gross I know) and slide it down off the hair. If you have a small comb, you can carefully comb out the clumps but they must be fully softened and you have to be really careful near the eye. If he is fussing just use your fingers. Repeat process until the large clumps are out. Then use a wet wipe or wet paper towel to wipe the hair. Dry it with a kleenex. Poor little guy. His eyes will need to be wiped daily. If it is kept up, it doesn't get that bad. Good luck.

| Hopefully you have a good relationship with this person so you could suggest she have her little one tested for dry eye at the vets. It is a simple test and does not hurt the dog. It is painful to the dog and a dog could lose its sight if not cared for. If it is not dry eye and after you clean the eyes up your friend could put a few drops of Braggs Apple Vinegar and it hleps to keep the eye boogers away.

| Thanks so much for the help! I followed your instructions to the letter, MorkieMom! It took awhile but the little man is free of the goop. He has some staining but looks a lot better. My breeder warned me to clean my babies eyes each night regardless and theirs have never been like this. I talked to his mom afterward and asked about the dry eye test. She said she never cleans them and usually let the groomer shave the area. She didn't know it was painful and/or dangerous. I am going to show her what I did when she gets back on Sunday and hopefully she will start taking better care of this baby's eyes. He is a sweetheart. I didn't know about the apple vinegar and will try that myself. Great tip! Thanks!
