help with dryness??? My 2 year old yorkie has always been a little itchy, but just recently he has been abnormally itchy and dry. He itched so much that he created scabs on his chest and it's all red. We live in Arizona and it's very dry right now, so we think that is part of the problem. Can anyone recommend a product that can help with the dryness? Thanks for the help!

I actually thought he was getting dry, so last week when I bathed him I used conditioner. Obviously that wasn't any help... I just want the little guy to feel better, it's so sad . Any other recommendations?

Where are you in AZ? I am in AZ too and Lily is itching but I don't see any scabs or anything yet. I don't see fleas but she is going crazy biting herself??

You might try giving some fish oil. I live in CO and it gets very dry here too. Ark Naturals makes a great fish oil supplement called Royal Coat Express. It has the omega-3s EPA & DHA but also contains borage oil providing GLA/LA (omega-6). I have been using it for several months now and I love it! You need to give Vitamin E with any Fish oil and the Royal Coat already has Vitamin E in it.

If you have some on hand, you can try giving him some flax seed. When I got my baby, she started becoming terribly dry and flaky, so I ground up some flax and gave it to her. It worked really well, but flax is ALA and must be converted to EPA/DHA to be any benefit to the dog. Not all dogs' bodies can make that conversion. If you don't have any on hand, the fish oil is a better way to go.

We had tried fish oil in the past when trying to solve his regular itching problem (along with changing his food), but that didn't seem to make any difference. That was over a year ago, so I think I'll give it another try. Thanks for reminding me of that option . We are in the phoenix area, but I don't think it's fleas. He doesn't go outside beyond our balcony very much and we have another yorkie who isn't itching at all. If it were fleas, I would imagine the other one would have them by now too...

Oh and zaknnana, have you noticed that YOUR skin is dry now? My skin got ridiculously dry about a week ago, so I would guess that Lily's itching is caused by the weather charge. Jay has always had itching problems, so with whatever is going on now it is quite severe and heartbreaking.
