| Vaccine clinic I know I should be taking her to our regular vet, but I can't afford it. For her shots and heartworm test, plus a physical (that's check her teeth, listen to her heart and feel her tummy - no bloodwork!) they want $192 - not including heartworm/flea medication. I can take her to the shot clinic this weekend and get her rabies, 6-in-1 (DAPP-CV), Bordetella and heartworm test for $50.00. Without going into a litany of my financial woes including the recent death of my husband (and no insurance), please believe me when I say that $50.00 will be hard enough to come by, and $192 is out of the question. I left a message for the folks who will be doing the clinic (I'm waiting for them to call me back); I wanted to ensure that the syringes were not pre-loaded, one-size-fits-all, or am I wrong? Wouldn't a 4 lb. Yorkie require less than a 185 lb. Great Dane? I also wanted to know the manufacturer of the vaccines, but if it's Ft. Dodge, I don't have much of a choice. She needs all the shots; splitting them would require a 2-3 month wait until they come around again (or I'd need their schedule and try to track them down - but that would still be less expensive than my vet). If I need to split the shots, which ones can go together? I assume the DAPP-CV would be by itself; can Rabies and Bordetella be given together? Also, which would be better for heartworm: Interceptor for worms and Comfortis for fleas, or is Sentinel safe enough? What do I need to look out for? She hasn't had reactions to shots in the past, but I couldn't bear to have anything go wrong. TIA for your assistance and input. Last edited by Lee B; 10-08-2009 at 06:07 AM. |

| Before going to a shot clinic, I would make sure that there is a vet there doing exams. This is the most important part of the yearly visit. I wouldn't vaccinate before an exam. Vaccine doses are generally the same for all dogs. That's because it takes a certain amount to get an immune response, so the size of dog doesn't matter. Rabies should be given separately (by at least two weeks). You could get the DAPP and bordatella together. I'm not saying it's best, but it should be okay. It looked like corona was in that combo and you may want to avoid it. How old is your pup though?

| She'll be 2 on Saturday; the clinic is on Sunday. And yes: a vet is giving the shots, not a tech. What I was thinking was the rabies and bordetella, and the heart worm test on Sunday. Then, if I have to, the DAPP-CV later. I don't know, but I am "assuming" that the -CV part is the corona virus. I know to avoid the leptospirosis shot, but that doesn't appear to be part of the program. And I thought the CV was only "icing", i.e., relatively ineffective or unnecessary after puppyhood, but not necessarily dangerous? Their brochure states that "individual vaccines are also available at discounted prices" - so maybe I can split them? Thoughts, please? and what about heartworm meds? |

| I just checked their website: their choices are limited. Heartguard Plus (1-25 lbs. x 6 doses) for $27.00 Revolution (5-10 lbs. x 6 doses) for $83.00 Frontline Plus (1-22 lbs. x 6 doses) for $84.00 Perhaps I can just ask for a scrip for something different/better and get it off the internet? Also, the DAPP-CV cannot be split; it's one shot only. |

| The reason I say not to give the rabies on the same day as any other vaccine is Dr. Schultz out of Wisconsin has expressed concerns over doing it that way (unless it is just an internet rumor, but I couldn't tell you for sure). The problem is that rabies causes so many reactions (well, that's what the studies show anyway) and it is just too much to give anything else. Corona isn't without problems, so I would try to avoid it. That said, if you can't, you can't. If she had her puppy shots and one year boosters, she doesn't even need DAPP this year (unless you take her somewhere where it's required annually). Those heartworm and flea choices aren't bad. Heartgard Plus is just fine as is Frontline Plus (I mean, not that it's great to be using the stuff, but I see you're in FL, so...). I personally would not use Revolution. I like and use Interceptor, but if I was given Heartgard, I wouldn't have a problem using it. Sentinel is fine, but the lufeneron is just a chitin inhibitor, so the fleas can't reproduce. If you want to kill the adults, something else would be better (or you cold get Advantage or something and use that with Sentinel). I know many people are loving Comfortis right now and it's sometimes the only thing that works, but I (JMO) would not use it unless absolutely necessary. It is very new and there are some reports circulating online about it causing liver problems in otherwise healthy dogs. I'd give this one a few years...

| Is the ivermectin in HeartGuard OK? It would be nice ... it's the least expensive. I checked their schedule for 2 weeks out ... they'd be 5-6 hours down the road in Southern FL. That's a ways to travel round-trip; I guess I'll have to risk all the shots in one day |

Just remember, if you already did one year boosters, giving DAPP again would be considered overvaccination by a lot of people and avoiding it for at least the next two years may be best. That is the AAHA's protocol.

Hmmmm ... she was due in February, but didn't get the shots then. I don't know what to do: should I get the full series now and then no DAPP-CV for another 2 years afterwards? Or just get the rabies and bordetella now and get the DAPP next year (or the year after)? These dogs are my LIFE now. I want to - NEED to! - do right by them, but I have to find the least expensive way to do it. They eat WELL - better than I do pound for pound by a *long* shot - and proper nutrition goes a long way to maintaining health. But they need their shots - but I don't want to overmedicate them - and this gets so darn complicated.

| How often is rabies required in FL? If you follow the AAHA protocol (this applies to distemper, parvo and hepatitis), you do pup shots (which end at about 16 weeks), then a DHP (or DAPP) booster one year later. After that it would be every three years (so you'd go two years without vaccinating with DHP). You could bring titers into it, but that does get expensive. Or you could just do another year of DAPP and then skip the next two if you would feel better about it that way. It's really up to you and very few vets are going to be much help in figuring out a good schedule.

In any event, I think I'll go with the full regime and then just do the rabies annually, then do the DAPP in a couple of years. I'll keep very good records this time ...

| You are right. At least in the case of Pfizer's Defensor I and Defensor III, it's the same thing. If your vet gave a one year last year, you'd have to get it redone this year. Unfortunately, it is a nasty one to be given yearly.

| Just talked to the vet who will be doing the clinic ... she suggested doing just the heartworm test, the rabies and the bordetella. It's less expensive to do the "package" deal than individually, so she'll give me the credit for the DAPP-CV for the next visit, which will be in November. She said she didn't like giving all the shots at one time to little dogs (Yea! someone who thinks!!!) and would also prefer to spread them out, but so many people just want to "get it over with", but she'll spread it out for me. I think I feel comfortable ... Oh, she said because Bella goes to the groomer, it's a good thing to do it. |
