| My dog's food was taken away by a customs' agent. A few years ago, I brought my family’s dog, a German Shepherded, to the US from Mexico. When we passed through customs, the agent asked us to give up all of her food and told me that we could not bring any food into the US with us. I had to get rid of all of her food. My German Shepherded is not longer with me. Today, my husband and I have a yorkie terrier, Cleo, and we want to travel with her to Mexico. She is on a very strict diet. If we change her diet, she get diarrhea immediately. If she goes with us, we will need to bring her food, how can I ensure that her food is not taken away? I’m not sure I can buy the same type of food in Mexico and I sure do not want to have a puppy with diarrhea either. What should we do? |

| Have you read the customs rules? I would start there just to be certain what you can and cannot do. Things might have changed or the agents were wrong...all sorts of things. I know people cross the borders all the time with animals so things could have changed. Last result I agree, see if you can ship.

Otherwise, hide it or just have a "local" take it over for you. It's much easier for them to walk back and forth across the border freely carrying anything when they don't have to do it legally. Seriously though, agricultural and food stuffs are restricted so going by the book, they'll likely take again.

| Put it in checked luggage and do not declare it Make sure it is out of its original packaging and rewrapped in ziplocs or something completely unlabeled (tupperware, etc.) |

| I work for Fedex and just called one of our agents to do a lookup what is required by customs to ship dog food. Too much hassle. They require a chemical breakdown of the dog food and health certificates and much much more. I'm so sorry. |

| If she is on a " special" food perhaps your vet can write a perscription for it? maybe that would work!! Just a thought or perhaps you could have the company ship it directly to the hotel your staying at, have them ship it a few days or even a week in advance and have the manager hold it for you !!

| Are you certain that they don't sell her food in Mexico? If not, mail order some & have it shipped to Mexico. Good luck. |

| Hi. I live in Mexico and travel back and forth to the U.S. I don't like the food they have over here...well, my baby doesn't. The best brand I found was Royal Canin and my baby didn't like. Other than that, I have seen Eukanuba, Diamond, Science Diet and pretty much all the grocery store brands. The first 3 I found at a pet store in Guadalajara. I brought food for my puppy from the U.S. into Mexico. They didn't ask me if I had food and I didn't mention it. I had the bags in a box along with her car seat and when they asked me what was in the box I said it was a dog car seat and they kind of laughed at me. But whenever I go to the U.S. I already tell the customs agent that I have a little bit of food (usually in a very small container) that I show them. They usually say that I can hold on to that small amount for the day, but whatever my baby doesn't finish, I have to throw down a garbage disposal. Even though the food is originally from the U.S. I usually leave food for my baby at my parent's house, so that little container is just for the airport, in case she gets a bit hungry (which she never does).

| P.S. If you mail order anything and have it shipped, you're looking at waiting about 8 weeks for anything. I ordered a book from Amazon 2 months ago and it took 8 weeks to get to me. Just a thought. Oh, that's through regular USPS mail. I guess you could try FedEx or another carrier. But they are pricey. A 10lb box costs about $90 to ship.

| My mom just went to mexico with her dog about 2 weeks ago. Going into Mexico, they let her keep a small amount of food. However, Coming back into the states, they kept all of the food. She was livid because they got delayed due to weather, and the poor dog couldn't eat all day. My mom has a large lab, and took him him for a dog show. He is also a registerd dog trained for emergency rescues. I would ship some to the Hotel you're going to be staying at in advance.

Then, you know what not to do to get it stuck in customs, and ship it however you need to, to get the food over there.
