ok, I just want to make sure I get this straight... you feed only 2 tablespoons of food a day? Just this recipe, nothing else at all? Maddie eats about 1/4 c of kibble in the a.m. and again in the p.m. Just seems like 1 tablespoon for each meal is so little???

I am wanting to try this also. Maddie eats Natural Balance but is not crazy about it. I already put cooked ground turkey in it and sometimes add shredded cheese just to get her to eat it. Some days she will just "dig in" and some days she just sniffs it and walks away...

also, do you serve it to them straight from fridge, room temp, or warm it up?

yes that's all they need. there is so much more nutrition in this food that they really don't need anymore than that. my puppy who is only 15 weeks old eats 1 tbspoon 3 times a day because she's so little and growing, but at 6 months i might switch her to just 2 a day....we also feed her cheerios for treats and i made banana pup cakes from a YT recipe thread and she gets a little of that every day...it's really enough tho!!

OK, suppliments ordered! Can't wait for them to come in to start my babies on this recipe. With 6 of them, I'll probably make a couple batches and freeze. They're going to all be scheduled for a dental within the next couple weeks, so what better time to get them started. Thanks again!

Biscuit had his tooth extracted with no problem, didn't even need sedation. (It was that loose. I don't know how it didn't fall on its own!) I have the tooth in a tube... it's so tiny and actually very white. I don't know how that happened

He had blood drawn today and I should be getting the results soon. I asked the vet about the dental procedure and I feel somewhat confident... I say "somewhat confident" because IV fluids are optional in dogs younger than 6 (however, the vet strongly recommended IV fluids in any dog and I explicitly requested it). I also focused on other aspects of the procedure and forgot to ask the most important and obvious question: What anesthesia is used, and how is it given?

BUT, they should be calling me in a few days to give me the results of the blood tests. I'll take the chance to ask about the anesthesia and then hopefully feel confident enough to make an appointment for a cleaning. (Their website says that a breathing tube is put in place and gas then begins to maintain the anesthesia... but I wanted to ask myself to be sure. Again, I could hit myself.)

Now I just need to enjoy the weekend without worrying about pointy instruments, anesthesia and tubes.

Ok, one more question......my babies range from 3 lbs to 15 lbs. You said your babies is only 15 wks, so I'm assuming she's small, right. Ok, for my little teapot girl, and the boys all inbetween (7-9 lbs) should I adjust for their weight? and how much would you suggest?

I'm wondering this, too. Biscuit's normal weight is somewhere around 10 lbs or a bit more.

At different weights, dogs def. need different amounts. Also, canine nutrition is not linear - so I'd be cautious w/ homemade recipes until you check them out w/ a nutritionist.

Just to compare, my Marcel is 3lbs and eats about 2 oz. of raw (Primal brand) per day (which is more than the usual % bc he is so active) and Wylie is is 7 lbs and gets 4-4.5 oz. of raw per day (ditto on activity). It's good to start w/ a certain amount and then feed to condition.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to check with my vet on the recipe before I give it to my little ones. They are all eating Chicken Soup right now. They love it and I don't have a problem with it; it was the "good for their teeth" part of this recipe that attracted me. They all need dentals done now, but if this recipe can help with that problem.....

i feed mine an adjusted measurement of 1 tbsp 3 times a day because she's growing. when she's older it will adjust more to her size and needs.

this recipe gives a certain calorie amount. Karrie on here can give you that if she wants to. it breaks down the exact amount of calories in the recipe so you know how to measure it correctly for the weight of the dogs.

advice. if you are going to talk to your vet about raw:

most vets do not agree with raw. they are programming in school to only approve Royal Canin or science diet or other kibble foods that aren't even premium choices. your vet might be a good one that actually knows a little about nutrition, but most don't know that much and they will recommend lower quality foods that have contracts with the vet offices somehow.

This is good advice!! Go to a nutritionist versus a vet. Vets don't always know that much about nutrition and will most always recommend a lower quality food like purina, science diet, beneful, or royal canin. they have contracts with these types of food companies to sell and recommend their foods and not anything better.

(Side note: the recipe that was posted by me or Karrie on here is made up by Karrie's mom who is a hobby dog nutritionist and has put much time, effort, and research into dog nutrition and knows what she is doing)

Thanks Rachel.......think I'll stick with you guys. After giving it some thought, chances are, my vet would probably not approve of the raw diet. Karrie's mom sounds like a very good nutritionist.

I agree, great advice. I would want to make sure that any diet I feed is approved by a licensed professional who is backed by years of study, education and experience.

Hi all -

Sorry I haven't been on the site for a while. Yes, Rachel is right, a lot of time and research has gone into this diet. I shared this diet because I personally have used it for 2.5 years with excellent results (good blood work, good check ups, etc.). My mother has used it herself for several years.

I'm not trying to "pimp" my mom or her recipe - but I do believe in her and her research.

In addition to providing me with this basic recipe, Mom has helped many other dog owners with special needs by adjusting the ingredients.

Everyone has an opinion on diets - and I encourage anyone to get a 2nd opinion from an nutritionist or vet - esp. if your baby has special needs. I shared this diet with my vet (who also studied nutrition) and she agreed that it is a very nutritious diet.

And yes, the amount fed should be adjusted by weight and activity. My Bailey is 6 lbs. and not that active. So feed more or less as needed to maintain the desired weight.
