| Is Taste of the Wild ok for puppies? I posted on the diet threads but no luck yet, thought I would post over here...I have a 5 yr old bichon that has had the worst allergies and tried everything we went grain free a little less than 1 1/2 years ago. At the time Cooper (my yorkie) was around 9 mos old and also was switched to the grain free and it has worked WONDERS for us allergy wise. I can not say enough about the difference it made with us. We have used Natures variety, natures balance and Taste of the Wild which is there all time favorite....they LOVE the Bison flavor the best.......my question is we are getting a new yorkie and I am wondering even though Taste of Wild says all stage formula do you think I am ok to feed a new baby that since it is not a "puppy formula".....I really hate to have to try another food just for her if not necessary, since I am sure it will be a fight to keep the others away from it....but also dont want to do any harm if I need a puppy food for the first 6 months. By the way my VET is no help on the issue, she still recommends Science Diet only!

I use to be a vet tech for this vet so we have that realtionship I guess lol anyways I would stick with a puppy food for the new puppy, the puppy food has certian ingredents in it that puppies need.

| Raw diet all the way lol, sorry i'm not a good answer to your question because i feed a home made raw recipe and it's good at all ages and stages, however i had to add that my vet ALSO is all about Science Diet, Iams, and Royal Canin. they must not get taught anything about nutrition or good diet in college??!?!! i hate the fact that the vets are always for SD it sucks!! all natural foods are much better, ask about anyone that uses them over the other cheap crap!? and not only that my vet doesn't agree with Raw. everyone that uses raw from my research has better results, less teeth problems (less money for the vet's to clean them) great coats, and healthier diets... are vets trying to force us to feed this nasty bad food so our puppies are sick more and see them more often???!!! she says Sadie can get E Coli and Salmonella from the raw diet...but what the heck does she think Sadie's ancestors ate? and what does she think Sadie would eat if she were living in the wild. would Sadie cook her own foods or go buy a bag of nasty dog food!? NO, she'd kill and eat raw meat and suck down chicken eggs raw as well. stupid vets, when will they learn??? lol |

| Haha, I was laughing a little when I read these posts, because my vet also recommended Science Diet! I saw a thread here on YT that said that SD has significant investments in many vet schools, as well as "kick backs" for vets to advertise & sell SD, so that is why they recommend it - not for the health of the animals, but for the money that goes into their pockets when they get people to buy it. I switched to Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul recently, and they love it! As far as your food question, I think they make puppy food for a reason & you may need to have your little one on puppy food. The only thing I can think of is does the TOTW say "for all pet stages" or something like that? Maybe it would be okay if that was the case, but I think you should really look into it before making that decison. Because puppies grow so much in the first months of their lives, they really need that extra nutrition that can be found in puppy food. Feeding time may be FUN at your house for a while! You could also maybe send TOTW an email from their website & ask them? Good luck! Taste of the Wild : Contact Us

LoL I know I heard that too about SD, then my vet went on to tell me to feed iams or uckenuba!! I flat out told him how I feel!! I guess I am lucky to have worked with him so I am able to tell him those things LoL, besides his whole food opinion he is the best vet! I told him I will listen to whatever he wants besides food lol with that I am sticking with what I want!

| Thanks everyone!! I do not even bring up the subject of food with the vet since they are all "brainwashed" in med school from Hills SD. I feel it is totally up to us to do our own research of what is best which is why we went grain free a couple of years back, tried the RAW thing and NOT for us....my guys would not eat it and am 100% happy with the grain free, just confused just because Taste of the Wild says yes it is an all stage diet, if it is really ok for a new puppy....like anything else just because they say it is ok want to be sure I am comfortable/done the research that I am ok to feed it to my new baby once she gets here.

| I didnt know that TOTW is for all stages.. Just to be on the safe side, make sure you have some nutrical for the new puppy and make sure the puppy is eating enough.

| I fed my minpin/chihuahua a good all life stages food when he was little and my husbands cousin fed his brother a not so good puppy chow. My Yuri stayed at a good healthy wieght and hasn't had any helth problems what so even while his brother has stayed super thin and sickly. the only issue I had with the all life stages food we tried was that it was pretty hard. he manages to eat it just fine, but it worried me when I 1st opened it and I'm not sure all puppies could have. |

| if it says all stages i'd sure give it a try! i don't know why they would say that and lie, it's a good brand anyways and i think it might be formulated for dogs in general. the raw diet i use is for all ages and stages, it's not like there's anything that special in puppy formula that isn't added in some other dog foods. maybe they put all that good stuff into their formula for all dogs or something. |

| My pups were on totw and all did well ,its all life stages so as long as their eating enough it has enough nutrients for a pup.

| Y'all are lucky your vet(s) suggest SD or Iams! Mine said Purina Puppy Chow And they SELL both SD and Iams TOTW is great food; they love it. Mine ate it as pups, and they still eat it. Every once in a while I switch things out (to another grain-free, of course!) so they don't get bored, and they are thrilled to tears to get TOTW back. |

| Shayna went on it at 9 mo, I read thst it is ok for all ages. Had to switch for her so my other mini bull gets it too and she is 7 yrs. They kept eating each others food, so now it doesn't matter. Even the picky one likes it... We eat Bison & Venison, didn't like the Salmon... |

| I just started all of my guys on the Taste of the Wild High Prairie Canine Formula -- it is a grain free all life stages food. Scarlett's four little girls age 8 weeks are doing fantastic on it. I mix about 2 cups of dry food with a small can of regular evaporated milk mixed with one can water. This will last about a day -- Scarlett finishes up what the babies leave. I fed previous litters a different all life stages food and they thrived, grew strong bones, teeth (believe me I know about the teeth ) and beautiful coats. |

| I think no matter what it's going to be a matter of personal taste and opinion. My thought is that if you're feeding a high-quality, all life stages food that they'll actually eat, it's better than a puppy food that they won't eat (or that they're allergic to!) Stella was on Royal Canin Puppy Food when I got her at 15 weeks. She liked that a LOT but it was making her really itchy (I presume it was the corn, but who knows)...so I switched her to Natural Balance at about 5.5 or 6 months...but she didn't like that so much, and I was always having to mix canned Wellness puppy food with it. I've recently switched her to Taste of the Wild Wetlands (so goes crazy for duck in any form, so I figured she might like it), but she's not used to the bigger bites so I still have to soften it with a little bit of canned food--maybe we'll try something in small bites next time (she loved the sample of Innova Red Meat that the guy at Luke's gave us!) My only concern with feeding TOTW or another all life stages food to a puppy is that the bites might be too big if the food doesn't come in a small bites size, and then you might end up having to soak the food all the time so they can eat it. Also, I learned from Stella that messing with their food while they're teething can be a bit difficult because they might already be extra-fussy to begin with. So maybe wait until after that stage to switch? Good luck, hope you can easily find something your pup likes! |

| my vet told me that it would be fine his only concern was when he got older that the higher protein may cause to much weight gain. |
