Haha, I was laughing a little when I read these posts, because my vet also recommended Science Diet! I saw a thread here on YT that said that SD has significant investments in many vet schools, as well as "kick backs" for vets to advertise & sell SD, so that is why they recommend it - not for the health of the animals, but for the money that goes into their pockets when they get people to buy it. I switched to Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul recently, and they love it!
As far as your food question, I think they make puppy food for a reason & you may need to have your little one on puppy food. The only thing I can think of is does the TOTW say "for all pet stages" or something like that? Maybe it would be okay if that was the case, but I think you should really look into it before making that decison. Because puppies grow so much in the first months of their lives, they really need that extra nutrition that can be found in puppy food. Feeding time may be FUN at your house for a while! You could also maybe send TOTW an email from their website & ask them? Good luck!
