Is Panting Dangerous? Once in a while, we forget to bring water with us when we take a nice talk. Sometimes, if it's too hot, or Yoda has been running around too much, he starts panting quite a bit, and the second we get home, he rushes to his water dish to gulp down 32 oz (ok, maybe 3 oz.) of water. I always see larger dogs panting up a storm when we are out, but just wondering if panting can be really harmful for our Yorkies or not... Any opinions? Thanks!

over heated yorkies? Fast Eddie...I have been told that all dogs pant because they don't sweat as easily as us...my vet said that Yorkies are vulnerable to heat stroke...I carry a bottle of water and a tiny dish on our walks.....but I don't take him out during the heat of the day......he got overheated on the beach in Galveston last week......panting very fast....heart rate very fast......lethargic.....listless....I gave him a cool bath.....put him front of a fan......and offered him water....he drank alot then didn't move for an hour....I am going to be more careful from now on........I don't know how long your walks are but he does need water if you are gone for awhile.

Dogs do not have pores in their skin, or sweat glands. They "sweat" (a body cooling mechanism) through their tongues. So panting when hot or exercising is normal for dogs. However, ALL dogs are easily subject to heat stroke and it is VERY dangerous. You certainly did the right thing by bathing in cool water and giving cool or even ice water to drink. We always have water around. Now, because we live on a lake, they often have a sip there. So far, they have not had a problem. Like you, Bettye, we give them bottled water when traveling since many dogs experience diarrhea with a change in water, even when it is safe water. When we were camped for the winter in Florida, we eventually mixed in a little of the filtered tap water, a little more ever couple of days, until we felt we could safely give them straight tap water, which we also began to drink gradually. Works.
