| Bad news at the vet Tobie has been yelping occasionally while playing with the other dogs and at first I couldn't figure out why... then I noticed this morning he limped for a minute after he yelped and then went back to walking normally. When we went to the vet today, I told him that I thought one of his back legs was bothering him and I was worried about LP. I also told him that Tobie seemed hesitant to jump up lately. He felt around his back leg and didn't think it was LP but he was worried about his hips so they did an x-ray. They came back and said he has "Avascular Necrosis of the Femoral Head" in both of his hips. Apparently, it's a genetic thing that causes the head of the femur to look like cottage cheese (his words) instead of being smooth and round. They gave me some glucosamine and said to have him rest for a couple of weeks. He said some outgrow it and have very few problems and some get worse and end up needing surgery. So far it hasn't really caused him very many problems and runs arounds and plays like any other puppy. Does anyone else know anything about this or have a Yorkie that has it? I'm just hoping that it ends up not being a very big deal but should I be worried???

Donating YT 1000 Club Member | YES! My Akita had this problem. He has been on Glucosomine for 6 months. I never noticed him walking incorrectly until the Vet pointed it out. Taking this has really helped him. He said over time it should really help. He said he didnt know about his future and if he would need surgery because we caught it early. Do they know how long it has progressed? |

Donating YT 10K Club Member | It's more commonly referred to as Legg Perthes disease. It's considered a genetic disease. The hip joint disintegrates due to lack of blood supply. Surgery is usually the only option to prevent the dog from going lame or suffering pain. You need to contact your breeder and personally I would take him to an orthopedic specialist.

| My Piper had surgery for Legg Perthes Disease last December. Luckily only one hip was involved. Piper never really limped at all. One day I noticed she was carrying her hind leg on and off. She didn't seem to be in pain but after a week of carrying that leg occassionally I had a gut feeling that something bad was going on. When she had her x-rays done she not only had the head of the femur looking like cottage cheese but there was also bone chips floating around. She had her surgery done within a week. Now she walks and runs completely normally. There are several people here that have babies that have had this surgery with great results. I also think you should find a good orthopedic surgeon.

| So we have an appointment with a specialist next week but I was looking up more information about this online. I saw with the surgery that the head of the femur is removed... how is this possible? How do their hips and legs function without it?
