| Stitches Hello...My guy was neutered about 9 days ago. He has dissolvable stitches...I see stitches on the outside of his incision....just wondering how long until they are completely gone...I was hoping to get him groomed in about 5 days from now....thought that 2 weeks would have been plenty of time, but I still see the stitches....just wondering thanks! |

| Absorbable/Dissolvable sutures are made of materials which are broken down by the tissues after a given period of time, which depending on the material can be from ten days to eight weeks. The part you see on the outside will not break down as it is not being exposed to the tissues enzymes. However, it should fall out after the internal portion of the suture has been dissolved. If it does not, you might want to ask your vet to take a look. Hope this helps. |

| This happened to my Roxy also, only one stitch was sticking out. It had been almost 4 weeks and I had called the vet and he said to just make sure that the incision was closed and secure. When I tried pulling on the stitch gently it was tight and I felt like I was going to hurt her. So I had called him again and he said to go ahead and give her a bath because sometimes the moisture will loosen the stitch. Well I did and by the time the bath and drying process was finished the stitch had come out. Not sure if this is the same thing but hopes this does help out.

| Ryder also has a stitch that never dissolved. It is still there, my vet said it just takes time and I am sure if it is not an open incision or scabbed them you can still get him groom just let your groomer know that he was just done and I am sure they can work around it or be aware of it. Good luck. Just a question... how has his recovery been?

| Thanks for the responses....so I decided to call my vet and ask what she thought about it...she called me back and apologized saying that it was another doctor that did the surgery...(ASPCA) and that they are not the dissolvable ones! So I am popping in tomorrow to get them removed....see we had discussed it and she said originally that we would use the dissolvable ones...she is very good and I love her...and she felt really bad about it...but said it would have actually eventually dissolved anyhow...so maybe all the ones that took long were not the dissovable ones? (She said that they would have been almost gone by now if they were the ones that dissolve).... thanks for asking about his recovery...Pops (my pup) is doing great...he was fine immediately and difficult to keep calm...he has a lot of energy...but recovery was great...I was given an anti-inflammatory to give for 5 days and pain killers that I could use if he seemed in pain...I used them the first two days and then stopped because he was fine...so...thanks all for your help with my questions! |
