| how much food to feed at 13 weeks? I have a thirteen week yorkie and i feed him half a cup of food a day(i feed him wellness) because he is only around 2.3 -2.5 pounds he eats three times even with treats in between. We give him treats also when we train. I have asked a lady that breeds and owns her own pet retreat and she said that it was fine. I do though , have a few people in my family who dont even breed yorkies that think he should be eating at least half a cup at each serving which i think is a little too much. If you would post your opinions on this i would appreciate it. |

| As for me I free feed their kibble during the day. But I home feed them twice a day with their meat, vegee, and grain mixture. Plus they get snacks, like yogurt, or beef jerkies, or sweet potatoe sticks. I find that if you free feed kibble, they only eat when they are hungry. It sounds to me like you are feeding correctly, 1/2 cup 3 times a day sounds like a little much for your pups size. I think that you are doing fine. |

| At that age/weight it should be a TOTAL of a 1/2 cup of food a day. He's just about ready to switch from 3 x per day to twice a day feeding. So....1/4 cup in the morning and 1/4 cup in the evening (or whatever works for you). I free feed. I put a 1/4 cup in her dish in the AM when I get up. Often she doesn't bother with it until I put her evening 1/4 cup in the dish. Sophie tends to only eat once a day. She might have a "good for you treat" and a nibble of cheese but otherwise, she eats the kibble, all 1/2 cup, at around 8:00 PM. There should be feeding instructions on your bag of food. Please note that most often these are amounts per day, not per dose.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | If you are feeding a nutritious kibble they should not overeat, unless there is some underlying problem. Joey's breeder recommended free feeding till the age of 6-8 months. This allows the pup to eat when hungry, and eat more during periods of rapid growth. I would just see to it that the bowl always has food in it. Most dog food has a recommended amount on the packaging. Go easy on the snacks; they can ruin the appetite for more nutritious food.

| Look on the Wellness bag. It will give you guidelines on how much to feed at particular weight/age. Again, keep in mind these are guidelines and your dog may not eat as much or may require a bit more depending on it's energy level. Even though Sophie is at an age where she can have a bit more food, she only ever eats a total of 1/2 cup a day. As does Nancy, I keep food out at all times. If Sophie should go through her 1/4 feeding in the morning , I'll put a little more in her bowl until I add her second 1/4 cup in the evening. Many folks who have owned only larger breed dogs don't always understand the intricate nature of the smaller breeders, especially when it comes to feeding. They never had things like hypoglycemic episiodes to worry about. Do some research (there's many good past threads on YT), read up on the breed, the food your feeding, etc. This way you are armed with the proper knowledge when your friends are saying otherwise. You'll know you are doing right by your dog.

| well thanks for the help and you are right haha my mother bf breeds plots and he thinks i starve my puppy even though i give it like i said 1/2 cup a day including treats. They think that since he is little which he is average weight for his age that he is not getting enough food. |
