| Do dogs get tired of their food? Our puppy Chewie had been eating his food just fine since we got him in September. He just turned 1 year last Saturday so he's been eating puppy food. His diet has been 1/4 cup NutriSource small breed puppy formula dry food mixed with 1/4 tray of the Cesar's wet food. This is what our breeder recommended and it was working great and he always ate with no problem (unless we would travel with him and then he would not eat well at my parents' house, but I was never too worried about that). We feed him twice a day at 6:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. A few weeks ago he has not been interested in eating his food. I've had to mix it with baby chicken or nutrical or heat it up or today I even fed him with a spoon! I want him to just eat like normal! Do you think it's possible he is just bored with that food? I planned to switch him to an adult food soon anyway, but I was going to get the same brand, NutriSource. Any thoughts? |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I don't believe dogs get tired of the foods like humans do. Dogs really can't even remember what they ate for breakfast. They go through growing spurts where they need extra calories, they aren't going to be as fussy, but if you start giving them special foods, they learn to hold out for these tastier foods. I do believe that dogs will turn their nose up at foods that have gotten stale. Hungier they are the less fussy they are.

| so should I just keep feeding him his normal food without doing anything special to it? And just figure when he gets hungry enough, he'll eat it? how would I know if the food is stale? |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Sometimes a dog may just have a little upset tummy, or maybe he ate something you don't know about and just wasn't hungry. Once you made his food a little tastier you spoiled him a little, but he will eat it when he's hungry enough. Now if he's experiencing hypoglycemia, he will lose his appetite, so some people give a little nutrical to stimulate the appetite, which should return within 20 minutes. At age one, he shouldn't be experiencing hypoglycemia, but some dogs less than four pounds, or those with an illness or fever can experience it as well. By stale, I meant some people report buying a dog food, and 2 weeks later they give their dog some and the dog refuses it. You need to keep dog food carefully sealed. You know how potato chips or crackers get stale if you leave it in a bowl for a few days, same with dog food, and you should always make sure all air is pressed out of the bag before you seal it.

| I don't think he'll get hypoglycemia. He weighs about 9 pounds! I suppose it is possible the food is stale. Although tonight my husband fed him and he ate just fine for him. I guess maybe he knows I'm the push over who will give him something better if he doesn't eat, while my husband just says "eh...fine, if you don't want to eat, don't eat..." |
