| yorkie losing weight-HELP My little 17 year old baby is losing weight. She has gone from 5.8 lbs six months ago to 4.6 lbs yesterday. She has been in chronic renal failure and getting sub-q fluids for 3 years now. Last year she developed congestive heart failure. She is on enalapril, vetmedin, lasix, calitriol, azodyl and baytril. She had a bout of pancreatitis about 2 weeks ago but is better now. She is eating 4 small meals a day and waking up in the middle of the night to eat. My question is what can I feed her or supplement her with to put some weight on her. Her poor little spine and hip bones are showing sooo bad. She is not in any pain that I can tell so I am going to let her live out her days at home. She has been so close to dying several times before but she pulled out of it. My vet just can't believe her-he says she is one tough little dog. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I wish I could say peanut butter since it's calorically dense, but if she had pancreatitis - then probably not due to fat. Is there a safe, canned food that the vet recommended? What fresh food (human) does she like? She sounds like such a tough little fighter. What a special girl you have there.

| Thanks for your reply. She has been on Hill's KD for 3 years. I have had to mix it with cooked ground turkey or chicken to get her to eat it but after her bout with pancreatitis I'm not sure whether to do that anymore. She does like chicken. My vet cannot get the Hi-Vit drops anymore and I'm having a problem finding them but I'm going to petsmart this morning to see if they have them. I am thinking about getting the senior nutracal but just not sure. My vet is not in today but he told me 2 weeks ago that he didn't think she would make it this time but she was not eating and could barely get around when he saw her last. I know my baby and I just feel like she is not ready to go yet because she is eating now and getting around so much better. |

Donating YT 10K Club Member | I know people who feed raw diets to help their dogs put on weight. Not sure of the fat content of that...I would think the chicken would be lower in fat. Sweet ol' girl. Hugs to you both

I do think the nutrical Sr. is a very good idea. For dogs who are sick and/or somewhat debilitated (or, senior and underweight) - I really do think Nutrical has a place here - that's a great idea. It's mostly sugar and fat, with some protein - so you may want to clear the fat content w/ your vet, in terms of the pancreatitis. There are a lot of folks on this site who've dealt w/ pancreatitis, but I'm not one of them - so I'm hesitant to talk about diet. I know those others will see your post though, and will help w/ ideas. Hang in there.

| Your baby sure does have a fighting spirit considering all her medical issues. I have one that went from 3.4 lbs. to 2.4 lbs. She looked like she was dying. She was finally diagnosed with EPI----Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency. Have to put an enzyme into her food and now she weighs 3 lbs. and looks wonderful. She acted fine even though she was dying....eating and playing. Blessings to you and your darling Yorkie. ~Joanne~
