| Just a note on heatstroke. It is starting to warm up here so I'm sure it is warming up where everyone is- well maybe not in alaska (sorry mike ) and i just wanted to give a reminder on heatstroke. A bonus to having a yorkie is- NO SHEDDING But this also means that our little guys have a hard time keeping cool (especially if your fur butt is like Layla and is still all black.... ) so they are more prone to heatstroke than other dogs might be. Signs of heatstroke: weakness, difficulty breathing, red tongue or gums- bright red thirst that is excessive vomiting, shivering, loss of appetite high temperature (over 104F) Generally, if your dog is just mildly overheated- it is a good idea to provide water and wrap your dog in a cool towel (NOT COLD) as your want your dogs' body temperature to come down gradually. What is of utmost importance is to keep in mind- just because you may have gotten your dog in a cool environment does not mean your dog is out of the woods. Their organs may be in jeopardy as they will continue to heat up after you have removed your dog from the sun. If your dog does not recover quickly from being exposed to the heat- it is essential that you get him/her to the vet. Hopefully we can all have a fun and safe summer and none of our babies will be affected by heatstroke this year |

| Thanks for the info! I didn't know non-shedding dogs have a harder time in the heat. Chase gets hot very easily. Like Layla, he still has mostly black fur. The panting has been more noticeable after walks in the past few weeks. I usually wash his paws with cool water, but had to give him a bath yesterday since it was so hot! I'm thinking of buying a cooling mat for him.

| I'd love to find a cooling mat ! that is a great idea ! This is one of my fears, living in CA. It gets triple digits , but we are indoors then, and even in the 90's we are inside I don't like the heat ! It's finally been cool enough to go out this evening! Suzi loved it! I was not aware of the fact that they get hotter without undercoats!

| thank you for this post!!!! i let my kids run around outside after work last week and it could not have been more than 85. they were only out there for about 10 minutes and all of the sudden i see bree gulping water down and then LAYING down on her side on the concrete panting. it scared the pants off me!!! she loves running around and playing and it was really scary. i really think it just got too hot for her little body. i immediately brought everyone in and gave them cool water and just held her for a bit until she got spunky again
