It is starting to warm up here so I'm sure it is warming up where everyone is- well maybe not in alaska (sorry mike

) and i just wanted to give a reminder on heatstroke.
A bonus to having a yorkie is- NO SHEDDING

But this also means that our little guys have a hard time keeping cool (especially if your fur butt is like Layla and is still all black.... ) so they are more prone to heatstroke than other dogs might be.
Signs of heatstroke:
weakness,
difficulty breathing,
red tongue or gums- bright red
thirst that is excessive
vomiting,
shivering,
loss of appetite
high temperature (over 104F)
Generally, if your dog is just mildly overheated- it is a good idea to provide water and wrap your dog in a cool towel (NOT COLD) as your want your dogs' body temperature to come down gradually.
What is of utmost importance is to keep in mind- just because you may have gotten your dog in a cool environment does not mean your dog is out of the woods. Their organs may be in jeopardy as they will continue to heat up after you have removed your dog from the sun. If your dog does not recover quickly from being exposed to the heat- it is essential that you get him/her to the vet.
Hopefully we can all have a fun and safe summer and none of our babies will be affected by heatstroke this year
